Re: Tracey Curtis-Taylor
Just to clarify my earlier comments Steven's comments that the award was made in 'good faith' look pretty hollow in the light of the facts which have emerged . In no way do I mean that the award was given incorrectly on the information presented. Whether it was truly worth the award I do not know. B...

Re: Tracey Curtis-Taylor
I find myself heartily agreeing with Chris. At its heart our association has to have integrity - if only so the engineering functions can survive. Steven's comments that the award was made in 'good faith' look pretty hollow in the light of the facts which have emerged. Yes at the time it was perhaps...

Insch airstrip needs your help
Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) are planning a large scale overhead power line across Aberdeenshire. Their preferred route corridor crosses directly overhead Insch airfield and its established 3km safeguarding zone. (see map) At this stage we need help from the aviation community to encourage SSE...

I'm afraid them do that.
The onlyreal cure is to put something reliable in the panel. These days that mans a new Garmin or something European, possibly Trig, Becker maybe Funkwerk. Unfortunately Narco simply cannot be fixed, they seem to self destruct in use.

Re: Manhours for recovering a Supercub?
Re the Supercub - Polyfibre used to give some estimates in the documentation. A quick browse of the SuperCub US site will also yield some info. But if you've not done it before and more than one of you is involved - the answer is ages! And you will almost certainly be faced with other jobs that will...

Re: CTA depiction on VFR Charts
I'm very much with Brian on this and related topics. Virtually all of these measures appear to be piecemeal 'fiddling'. If I fly the length of France I get joined up ATC (with a huge amount more than a Basic non-service), I get guaranteed transits of controlled airspace and the rules are pretty stra...

Re: Lower Airspace Radar Service (LARS) Review.
I'm very much in James c's camp. Long before this Basic (and nearly completely useless)service the LARS did a good job. you would frequently get passed nearly seamlessly from one provider to another as you trudged up or down the country. If you do this in France the same thing happens - often even r...

Re: Proposal to Introduce Radio Mandatory Zones (RMZ)
As I read the present proposals they are actually an extension of the present controlled airspace arrangements. They can be implemented in E.F and G airspaces and aircraft can only operate in them after informing the controlling authority, giving the required information, or having met the specific ...

Re: Fuel Filters
The reason I say that many/most certified aircraft do not have filters is because in this context - 100 micron of less the gascolator does not count. If it has a mess - and many do not - then it will take out chumks of debris. The finest mesh I have seen was in my old Terrier - a wonderful turned br...

Re: Fuel Filters
I've had those filters installed for the last 5 years. I think it is worthwhile considering what you are trying to achieve when it comes to fuel filtration. Most certified aircraft do not have fine fuel filters - they do not need them as the jets etc in most conventional carbs can be cleared with a ...

Re: "booking out" and SERA requirements
IIRC we need it here because Michael Bentine's (yes him - potty men etc) son went missing in an Auster and it took some considerable time for his body to be found. The well connected Mr Bentine bent politicians ears until this 'need' was established. Since then of course all sorts of people consider...

Re: Fuel Filters
My fuel filters are not located in the engine compartment - but they are glass / chrome types which are very easy to see the state of. With careful mounting they should be ok forward fo the firewall. See this link http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/fuel-filters/sytec-pro-flow-low-pressure-fuel...

Re: Rotax and Avgas
As John says Rotax have said the 912 is ok on ethanol, I believe the LAA are trying to get the CAA to publish something along those lines - but as with all these things it is a bit like pushing water uphill. 5 minutes on the net will show you why the service intervals on Avgas are halved - the grey ...

Re: Air Drills and Compressor
Your problem is the 'quiet' bit. For straight forward jobs you could use a portable electric drill. I have an 18V Makita and it is fast and powerful enough for simple jobs. But it is a huge thing and needs an extension and a right angle drive to get into a lot of places that an air drill would direc...

CAA has a job to do, it isn't trying to stop non ICAO aircraft coming to the UK, it is allowing them to and having to charge for the admin in doing so. Where do we draw the line? Do you really expect an airworthiness authority to simply decide that from now on they are going to let any non ICAO air...
