Re: Arplast PV 50

My PV 50 is getting on a bit (2002) so I'm interested in who can refurbish these props or supply spares. Someone did mention to me that P&M aviation may be able to help but I have to admit I've never contacted them to find out. They are quite popular on microlights so there must be a lot of Arplast ...

Re: Hand held radio.

I finally managed to test my FTA-750 in the air today. Readability 5 from Norwich radar at a distance of 22 miles from 2000 feet using the standard Yaesu power supply. As I previously mentioned, the audio quality from the Yaesu is much better than my old Icom. I do, however, appear to be getting mor...

Re: Hand held radio.

The MoD7 form specifically states "it is required to list in the table below all currently installed transmitting avionics equipment fitted to the aircraft, e.g. comm radios, transponders..." and there is also a section covering hand-held radios:- "For equipment with a CAA ‘LA3’ approval number, a p...

Re: Hand held radio.

I've finally managed to fit my FTA-750 and so far all is well. The audio quality, both on transmit and receive, is much better than my old Icom IC22E but I haven't yet been able to test it with a station 20 miles away at 2000 feet as required. One thing that's very noticeable is that the Yaesu is mu...

Re: Hand held radio.

It's certainly beginning to look as if the supplied 12V to 9.5V power adaptor is part of the problem. Today I've been chatting with someone who has the problem that neither TX or RX works when connected using this. In the next few days I'm hopefully going to visit his airfield with my radio and powe...

Re: Hand held radio.

A pattern is emerging, and it isn't a good one! Mike, are you using the radio in 25 KHz mode or 8.33 KHz mode? I'm curious as to whether this will make a difference. I think that, in theory at least, it shouldn't make any difference as the radio should revert to a 25 KHz bandwidth when used on our c...

Re: Hand held radio.

That's interesting! I've bought an FTA 750 but I haven't fitted it yet so can't give you any kind of comparison. I'm hoping to fit the radio in the next couple of weeks. It could be worth checking the power output as well. More or less any power meter capable or reading at airband frequencies will d...

Re: Hand held radio.

I suspect this may be rather difficult to do. Any amplifier would have to include switching for changeover between transmit and receive and would probably be quite large due to the large heatsink required for AM power. Could I ask why you need to do this and what power output you require?

Re: Mode S Transponder checking?

I can't really offer too much in the way of useful advice but I wouldn't be too concerned about FR 24 coverage as this depends on ground stations feeding data into the system and without ADSB you will find large gaps in coverage. I've noticed this on my own flights. I have the same transponder and h...

Re: Documents to be carried.

Even the definition of "original document" is surely a bit vague though I've no doubt it's defined somewhere. I've never had an "original" insurance certificate. I've only had emailed certificates which I print myself at home. So, is my printout an original document or a copy?

Thanks, Chris. As you say, a bit late now in my case but all noted for the future. I hope CFS get their act together soon though.

Re: Rotax Article, LA mag, Oct '15

The CFS general Modus Operandi is totally out of synch with the way LAA and BMAA aircraft operate in the UK. I forsee the growth of non-manufacturer parts will become the norm in the UK for Rotax parts, similar to how it has grown in the rest of Europe. Have you ever tried just buying parts from CF...

I have to agree. It's a bit of a mess at the moment. Let's hope they listen to feedback!

I've got a copy of the instructions, Alan. I can't see a way that I can send you a PM with the attachment but if you'd like to drop me a PM with your email I'll get back to you asap. I'd be interested to know if you've removed yours for overhaul? I want to get mine overhauled next winter and I'm cur...

Re: mogas

The fiasco continues. Nobody has ever been able to give me a satisfactory explanation as to why, for example, a bog standard Eurostar microlight can use fuel with ethanol but fit an electric fuel pump, have the aircraft changed to SEP (as can be done so long as it's not a factory built Eurostar) and...
