Re: LAA “GRASS ROOTS FLY IN” RETURNS TO POPHAM 18-20 AUGUST
Well done Bill for organising that rally way up there in Scotland. My friend and I have flown our Piper Arrow III up to those parts (Perth) twice now on LAA Fly-ins and both times we had big issues with the Scotish WX. But we got there, and the local club and flyers did us proud. There was a great f...

Re: LAA “GRASS ROOTS FLY IN” RETURNS TO POPHAM 18-20 AUGUST
Yes Ian, and as I am now retired I would be perfectly happy to contribute to "doing better" as you put it. But as I remember, it was the LAA/PFA CEO and the Excecutive committee that decided the venue for the rally and the rally committee then worked on that. This procedure may have changed these da...

Re: LAA “GRASS ROOTS FLY IN” RETURNS TO POPHAM 18-20 AUGUST
I think you will find Ian that there are quite a few of the individuals that were involved with the Rally organisation from the 1980s still going to the present rallies! I personally first flew my Robin Dr250 into the PFA rally at Cranfield on 7/7/1984 and have been doing it, in different aircraft a...

Re: LAA “GRASS ROOTS FLY IN” RETURNS TO POPHAM 18-20 AUGUST
You know, I had a sneaking suspicion that this would happen. It's no secret amongst long term members that the "management" have always wanted to get rid of the rally, and have suceeded on some occasions. The "Grass roots Fly In" was just that.."A Fly In" and absolutely NO substitute for a proper LA...

Re: LAA GRASS ROOTS FLY IN SUCCESS!
Yes, it was fun, but it does NOT replace the Rally. I appreciate that Covid played a big part in reducing what many of us look forward to every year. Since the "Old days" of Cranfield and Wroughton, many people's reason for belonging to the PFA/LAA was... The Magazine and the Rally. I believe that t...

Are we a bunch of Old Farts?
As my place of work is miles away from this country, it is sometimes difficult to get my working dates sorted out to allow me to fly into the rally. But yet again, for the third year in succession I have managed to swing it and I will be there, weather and aircraft serviceability permitting of cours...

Re: LAA Rally - Sywell Car Parking - Help Required!
Hi Nigel
I've got a 1305hrs slot time on Friday when I will be flying in. As soon as I've got my tent up I'm available in the car park as required.
I'm an "old timer" to the rally these days and nothing would give me greater pleasure than to help out where I can.

It’s not just you Simon. A couple of friends and I were chatting after flying a few weeks ago and brought the subject up in debate. Someone said that they wouldn’t be at all surprised if the authorities suddenly compromised with the aviation groups by reducing the restriction, thus getting a general...

Yes indeed, Ian and I remember with fondness the huge and excellent rallies of the past, when we were third in line with Osh and Sun & Fun. I don't think we ever made the 2000, but we came close and if the weather is kind to us, I don't think we will have to wait that long before we see the number o...

Flight Planning and In-Flight GPS Software
Notwithstanding all the "What ifs" that have gone along with the evolution of the GPS navigator, I'd bet that most Pilots don't leave the ground without one, either in use or in their bag somewhere. And it seems that virtually every month a bigger and better unit is reviewed in a flying magazine oft...

If there is a switch off of VOR/DME then I think it will take many years to complete. Sending out a big list of VORs that they intend closing seems to me to have an air of shock tactics about it and for that reason I smell a rat! Are we about to see a consultation period over this which will emerge ...

Temporarily devoid of wings, I drove into the event on the Saturday and I have to say I'm very pleased that I went, as was Sheila. The change of policy on the airside issues worked well and I thought that MKAS, who I criticised on previous postings, did absolutely sterling work. A big "Thank you" an...
