Northern Ireland LAA Strut

Hello All - I’ve tried to generate interest before (years ago!) to start a Northern Ireland Strut, without success. I thought it was time to try again. I’m building a Pietenpol, starting a youth education project to rebuild a primary glider, involved with YES, and still employed (saying I’m working ...

Aerobuild Northern Ireland

Hello All - I am starting a project in Northern Ireland to involve young people in the rebuilding of a primary Glider - we are calling it the Grasshopper Aeroplane Factory - but it appears to be an Elliott's of Newbury (EoN) glider that the Ulster Gliding Club has donated to the project. If you are ...

Re: Electronic Conspicuity. LA article Dec 21

Excellent article. As a non flying (still building) NPPL it is scary how uncoordinated all these system are. It is going to quite a while before this is resolved, but good to see the progress. Thank you.

Re: Use of Stainless Steel AN bolts in place of CAD plated AN bolts

Thanks Mark - everyone seems to think SS is like jello - no strength at all.
I understand about the galvanic issue - would you think CAD plated AN hardware would be better than SS? There are issues with cadmium/titanium as well. I thought the SS hardware would be less of an issue.

Re: Use of Stainless Steel AN bolts in place of CAD plated AN bolts

Hello Mark - I'm making my fittings of titanium (don't ask) so no issue with aluminium. I want to know how the SS AN bolts compare strength wise to the CAD plated bolts. According to the LAS (ACS) site hardware listing, both meet the minimum tensile limit of 125ksi. Yes SS is not as strong, but both...

Use of Stainless Steel AN bolts in place of CAD plated AN bolts

I would like to use SS AN bolts in place of CAD plated bolts for all fitting attachment on a Pietenpol Air Camper. Is there any problem? If so what would be the issue?

Re: Converted Auto Engines for permit aircraft

Id love to see a Diesel engine developed for permit aircraft use. Wilksch had one years ago, but it did not really get off the ground..... Most development today is for large, 150+ hp engines. Something 80 to 100 hp would be just the ticket.

Re: EAA Solidworks member benefit (Merged)

I've used Solidworks for about 9 years; it is a really powerful package, but it is another language to learn. I took a City and Guilds level 2 course to get started and it helped a lot. Some of the things I have drawn early on, are very awkward - there are always 6 different ways to design something...

Editing LAA Forms

I've downloaded several forms from the site and am having trouble saving my work. I can't seem to get around the protection on the .pdf file. I want to be able to share and edit my mod with a friend so we can be sure it is correct. I save my work, but when reopened, it is not complete. What am I mis...

Re: Equivalent Metal Materials

Hello Gents - thanks for the replies - I am not really looking to substitute materials, as I know this is a dangerous area. I am simply wanting to know what is equivalent (or better) than the alloy's referred to on the drawings that are either difficult or impossible to source. 4130 is easy. The alu...

Equivalent Metal Materials

I'm building a Pietenpol; the original plans were simple - use steel! The 'Wills' approved plans specify several materials that I have had trouble finding, equivalent or otherwise. Is there somewhere I can look up equivalent material qualities/alloys? For example: Steel - S510, 28 ton steel are spec...

Acceptable Plywood Standards

I'm building a Pietenpol and would like to use some American 8 foot sheets of ply to minimize the number of scarf joints that have to be made for Fuselage bottom, sides and spar webs. Can anyone tell me if the MIL-P-6070 standard for ply is acceptable for LAA permit aircraft? I still don't know if I...

Titanium Metal Fittings

I am building a Pietenpol, and have found a supply of .050" through .100" sheet in commercially pure grade 4 and .125" in 6AL4V alloy. These are small offcut pieces, but plenty big enough to have the parts cut out using waterjet. Although the commercially pure stuff is not as strong as 4130N, it is ...

Re: Availability of Spruce

Hello Traumahawk - this may be way too late for you (just saw your posts). I am building a Pietenpol and plan on using Douglas Fir. I have selected, purchased, delivered, milled and sanded several large boards to the finish sizes I need - mostly 1" x 1". It is much cheaper, even when you consider th...

EAA Stearman Sweepstakes Eligibility

I just read the promotion in the LAA Newsletter about the EAA Sweepstakes to give away a renovated Stearman. You have to read the really small print to know that the Sweepstakes are NOT open to residents outside the USA and Canada. Including this promotion in the Newsletter gives very misleading opt...
