Re: Ignition Screening - Gipsy Major

Thanks John. At the risk of sounding thick, how do you insulate the mesh from the spade connector and the plug electrode? Do you have a pic you could send me?

Re: Open cockpit flying during winter

Best buy for me was a pair of 'vintage' fur-lined flying boots. Makes all the difference having warm tootsies.

Gipsy Major Starting

In the spirit of sharing knowledge (and in anticipation of the cold damp of autumn creeping up on us) I thought I'd start a thread on tips and tricks for starting reluctant Gipsy Majors. Tips and tricks I've found useful are: 1. On very cold weather I flood the inlet manifold and then, before the fu...

Re: Ignition Screening - Gipsy Major

Thanks John. And do you use screened plug caps of any kind?

Re: Future of the Forum

Bit of a 'bump' here, but any progress on the idea of setting up some type-specific sub-forums? I pm'd Brian Hope but I haven't had a reply yet.

Re: Future of the Forum

Brian,

That's very encouraging. Thank you. I know a number of Moth/Gipsy owners who would be interested. I even offered to help organise or moderate it if that was necessary. Who should I talk to set it up?

Why not trial a Tiger Moth / Gypsy Major sub-forum and see how it goes?
Or a Contineltal A65 - O-200 sub-forum?

I'd love to. But I'm not entirely sure how to set it up. Probably under Engineering..?

Re: Future of the Forum

David, have you considered setting up such sub-forum on the Matronics site ? I use the Europa specific forum there, and if you had one for your aircraft type, I would hope you would find it as useful as I find the Europa List. I hadn't heard of the Matronics site. Had a quick look at it (horrible f...

Re: Future of the Forum

One positive development would be to allow the generation of type-specific sub-forums (fora?). I operate a Tiger Moth powered by a Gipsy Major. It would be great to have a go-to place in which to ask type-specific question or offer type-specific advice to other owners. Once upon a time there were le...

Thanks! I wish I could take the credit for it, but that would be wrong. It's a lovely aeroplane 'though.

Re: Instruments article feedback

At the risk of being howled down, I do think that there is some merit in the idea. Here's why. Personally I do much of my private VFR 'bimbling' far from controlled airpace where, frankly speaking, I don't really need any instruments at all for the purposes of avoiding airspace busts. And I would sa...

Ignition Screening - Gipsy Major

I have a Gipsy Major which does not have screened ignition. Using my old 25MHz radio the background ignition 'noise' was fairly low-level and quite manageable. With the new 8.33 radio it is much more noticeable. It's not a problem on the intercom or when close to a ground station but when I am tryin...

Re: P1 and P2

As an instructor, I think it’s a grey area when doing a checkout on someone with a valid rating. They could be P1/S in this situation, but equally P1 as they are operating within the remit of their rating. I think an instructor could argue P1 also. I’m not an SEP examiner, but following a successfu...
