It would be worth having a look at SkyAngel http://fly.styli.sh/ which is free at the moment and looks superb, or at pocketFMS which I've run on a 747 with a £89.99 Navman car sat nav.

Agreed but to get a full moving map display and planning software in the flight deck for c£200 it's not bad!!
The way to go would prob be a touch sensitive Atom powered tablet running Windows 7.

Not free (€150 per year) but very good is Pocket FMS which will run on any device running Windows CE which includes many car GPS but not Garmin or TomTom.

The GPS is not the problem, what is is the database. If you are going to check against a chart, it would have to be made by a different manufacturer from the GPS database provider. I want a cheap to fly permit aircraft that I can tour with my wife around Europe. It must lift at least 300kilo with fuel and be easy to fly. It must fit people 2 meters high. My PA28 can do it why can't any permit aircraft?
