Re: Open cockpit flying during winter

Flying a Jodel D9 at 3000' when then ground temperature was 0C was an exercise in getting very cold. I got an ex USAF sheepskin flying jacket after that and wore layers underneath topped by one of these flying suits 'Genuine AFV Crewman Flying Suit British Forces RAF Issue Surplus Coveralls - New'. ...

Re: Clutton FRED running costs?

i've certainly been very taken by the idea of owning a FRED and had arranged viewing the week after next. But that's now a future possibility as I've just got a Jodel share at an airfield 15 minutes from home. Spreading the costs of ownership and maintenance among six people will be a lot cheaper an...

Re: Clutton FRED running costs?

I've just had this very fast response from Matthew and am posting it in case it's of use to others: '...Just about any trailer wide enough for FRED's gear should do the trick, best would one with a 16' bed. Something smaller, even a horse trailer, would do in a pinch, but you might need to build a f...

Re: Clutton FRED running costs?

Open cockpit is much more fun :) Although a winter Jodel D9 flight from White Waltham to Sywell at 3000' left me freezing! Back to the FRED: If I buy I have the option of towing it on the main wheels or loading it onto trailer. Anyone know the dimensions of a suitable trailer? This would be a 100 mi...

Re: Clutton FRED running costs?

The less you weigh, more fuel you can carry. As for being supple, climbing into Piper Cub tests that. I'm not committed to a FRED, but do want to find a simple homebuilt to own or share in the next year or two. I have to find cheap flying or give up. So if anyone knows of one in the Suffolk area, ne...

Re: Clutton FRED running costs?

Great discussion here - thanks. As an ex glider pilot, the simplicity of these small, VW powered homebuilds makes me feel more at home than some modern spam can with banks of instruments where I feel more like a machine operator than a pilot. Ideally, I'd be buying another share in a Jodel D9, but a...

Re: Clutton FRED running costs?

Unfortunately Chris, a new syndicate member pranged Noddy about three years ago but setting the throttle too high when propping single handed. Noddy nosedived, smashed the prop and shock loaded the engine, causing Noddy to be a write off. One of the syndicate members bought Noddy off the insurance c...

Re: Clutton FRED running costs?

Thanks the helpful comments all. I'm hoping to take a look at it next week. I had a share in a Jodel D9 for several years (White Waltham's Noddy) and that was great fun to fly - and cheap.

I'll let you know what happens

Clutton FRED running costs?

I'm thinking of buying a VW powered FRED Mk2. What are the likely running costs? I have a garage to keep it in to save on hangarage.

Thanks for any help

dropped wooden dipstick into Jodel D120 tank

Feel a real dipstick myself - my fingers slipped and the wooden dipstick dropped into the tank of the groups Jodel D120. Any tips on how to get it out - or could I even leave it there? Would I be able to use Maplins inspection camera here http://www.maplin.co.uk/handheld-inspection-camera-with-sd-re...
