Ford's new 1Litre motor is tiny and frugal. a three cylinder turbo Diesel, it develops 100HP. Derated to, say 75, I wonder what it weighs? The whole car costs less than a Rotax. Tom, The new 3 cylinder engine is a petrol and not a Diesel. I know I was part of the design team. This engine and also t...

Leburg Ignition failure

Airstrip flyer, Thanks for that suggestion. That is almost exactly what I have done. First I swapped the connections and still had an issuehis was done straight after landing. I then took both units of the plane. Removed the covers. No obvious damp, approximately 2 days storage in airing cupboard. C...

Electonic ignition advice requested Leburg failure

I have recently just finished rebuilding a Luton Minor and have flown so far about 4 hours. (Francis wants 5 hours for certification) I rebuilt the VW engine with Leburg ignition units during the rebuild. Yesterday at 1500 ft over head Great Oakley one of the Leburg units failed. In a previous post ...

I thought the landing light was an interesting requirement as I, like I suspect many attending the event do not have one.

Slot alteration problem

I have had the same issue. I followed the instructions in the slot confirmation email to change my plane as the planed a/c will not be ready and got a message telling me my previous slot time was unavailable. This was not a big problem as I managed to get a revised slot 4 minuits later. Have you tri...

Fuel Flow check

I seem also to have read that in some cases this check can be waved but my inspector has insisted that I do a check on my plane prior to flying after a major rebuild as if the pump is faulty we might only find out at 200 feet on the first take off. I completed the test today. My engine is a VW with ...

Fuel flow test

Noel, Thankyou for the reply. I have since I posted, discussed this with my inspector and we have agreed on how we are going to do this test. The plan is to add a T piece into the fuel line and loop a pipe off this Tee upwards and then down into my measuring jug with a clamp to close this feed as re...

VW engine with CD150 Stromberg Fuel Flow

I am about to do a fuel flow check of my fuel system prior to flight testing after rebuild. The engine is a VW fitted with a engine driven pump and a CD150 Stromberg carb.

Can anybody advise what the minimum fuel pressure should be for this set up?

Alternative Ignition

Roger, I have been thinking about this for a while. My current project is getting close to being finished and I am looking into a follow on project. My biggest issue with a new project is the engine. Can you keep me in the email loop. (You already have my email address) What I want is an inline air ...

How Much?

Trevor, I think I share what I think is your opinion. Nigel seems to want an organisation where everything is controlled and regulated. The LAA is not like that and I for one and glad that it is not. I have stated before members need to get along to a strut and actually talk to each other and in sho...

Welshman, The leburg system has a programed ignition timing. It is fully retarded below 500 rpm for easy starting and to avoid kickback above 500rpm the timing advances as per a programed map profile developed by David. There is a graph of this in the instructions. I think your point regarding ignit...

SO >>>>>>>>>>>> What is

I think you can not compare starting a vw aero conversion with a car. Most of us have engines that are started by a hand swing. unless all is set right, fuel prime etc. they will not start. With the car as Tom says you crank it on the starter motor until it draws enough fuel to prime etc. different ...

Come on now chaps, if we are not careful we will be criticised for making this forum interesting!!! I would have liked to fit a proper silencer but ruled this out because of weight, space availble under the engine, complication of manufacture and finaly time which it would take, I want to get this p...

Starting a 1779 VW with a Zenith

Ian, I may have confused you with the term "Stinger" What I have fitted is a baffle designed to take the bark out of straight through pipes. I am at work at the moment so do not have the details to hand but I have posted a typical picture on Flicker (not sure if we can post picture here) http://www....

Starting a 1779 VW with a Zenith Stromberg Carb.

Good News, She Runs! During the week I striped, cleaned and rebuilt the carb. I also checked the intake manifold was seating properly and not leaking. Nothing obvious wrong. Tried to start it this morning. Set choke and throttle and gave it about 20 blades to prime then attempted to start. Not even ...
