Paint Options.

Hello, I'm currently needing to paint some brackets that are inside and outside of the wings, and I'm thinking either 2k acrylic or I was wondering whether to even try some brake caliper lacquer (I believe it's epoxy-based), as this'll be hard-wearing and more chip resistant. What I don't want to do...

Thank you - Branscombe Charity Air Day And Classic Car Show

Just to say a big thank you to all those who attended the Branscombe Charity Air Day And Classic Car Show on 24th July, and helped make it as enjoyable as it was. Nice air display, along with nicely restored classic/vintage cars, and a good selection of visitors' aircraft to browse and ask questions...

Ah, I certainly didn't know that. - I was under the impression that the RV8 was better than the RV4 in all respects. I didn't realise the RV4 is better for aerobatics. Yes, I agree with your IMC comments. I suppose with an IMC, there's a risk of falling into the 'Oh I can't fly there as there's no V...

That's a fair point Brian. It's obvious when you think about it. I was imagining getting stuck for days on end, but there's nothing stopping you taking a tent, or finding some other means to get home. It's certainly not worth risking lives over. Plus, can't find much on the Sherwood Ranger. Certainl...

Agreed Brian, although being a new pilot, I was sceptical before only a few months ago. My confidence in my flying has certainly improved since flying further afield than I did a few months ago, although if I'm completely honest, there's still that slight nag in the back of my mind that questions wh...

Ah! I didn't realise that. That sounds like a good plan! Thanks Nigel. Plus yes Bill, I appreciate that there are bound to be people that visit the rally all over the world, however there is the 'other half' to consider too! Like I said, I'll try and go. It would be good to fly there, although as I ...

Some more good points there, thank you. (Oh, and yes, I believe you weren't biased, especially now I see the reasons behind why the Vans aircraft are so popular!) I have been wondering, if I'd spent time and money making my own kit, whether I'd still want to hire out the usual cessna/PA28 club aircr...

Wow. Many thanks for your replies. I never thought I'd get as detailed replies as those! Just to answer those questions... I suppose I'm more inclined to edge towards sacrificing the second seat, for something cleared for aerobatics. Reason being, is if I wanted to take someone else up, I can hire o...

Suggestions for suitable homebuilt ideas...

I'm not entirely sure that this is in the right place on the forum. If not, I apologise. Does anyone know if there's a homebuilt aircraft that even approaches ticking all the boxes below: Aerobatic - (doesn't have to be rated for +/-500g(!) just to be able to do the basics) Two seats, Metal, ...

Well the primary structures are aircraft wood, like Spruce and whatnot, however the tertiary structures are standard ply etc., which are affected.
I could give it a coat of linseed oil or shellac. Not sure which would be better.

Thanks.

Also, what about tung oil, or other such oils?

Any thoughts? :D

Ah! I didn't know Linseed oil does the trick.
Is there any issue with using the commercial stuff that contains substances such as Permethrin?
I'm assuming if I went for the Linseed oil method, I would treat the wood first, as per usual, and then apply the Linseed oil?

Thanks again.

Woodworm Prevention

Now this may just be a silly question, but I was wondering what, if any, precautions/treatment people use for prevention against woodworm. The aircraft I'm involved in restoring is 94 years old, so unlikely to have already been treated! There may be an obvious solution that every homebuilder uses, b...
