Permit renewal on-line?

I've just filled in the blue paper form for my permit renewal. When I went to the web site to check on the charges I noticed that you can now pay on-line rather that writing out another piece of paper... the cheque. This is all good but I wonder if we might one day be able to do the entire renewal p...

Re: 8.33hz radios

One would like to think that whoever manages frequency allocation will keep that technical fact in mind (for a while anyway). And this really is the nub of the issue. There are two key reasons why this won't happen without a concerted outcry from us aircraft owners. 1. The CAA will, left to its own...

Re: 8.33hz radios

You're right in principle Tony but there are some differences that make this change more problematical. When channel spacings were 100kHz, then 50kHz and eventually 25kHz, the receiver IF filters, which set the effective channel width , remained more or less the same at 15kHz wide. Admittedly in the...

Re: 8.33hz radios

I don't usually get into this sort of thing but a previous post saying that 8.33 radios are not "backwards compatable" is just nonsense. I'm afraid I do not agree. This issue is not whether 8.33kHz capable radios are backwards compatible. They are - via a cunning technical trick that, by the way, a...

Re: 8.33hz radios

Whilst it is perhaps inevitable that 8.33kHz will eventually become the required standard, I think this is going to end up as another Mode-S debacle, with similarly protracted deferrals. In essence, 8.33kHz is not backwards compatible with 25kHz: where 8.33kHz channels are deployed, 25kHz channel ra...

Re: Let's call it a succcess, shall we?

My first LAA rally and I loved it! Thanks and kudos to everyone who had a hand in the organisation. I need to get next year's dates in my diary. Can I assume 30-Aug to 01-Sep, or is it the following weekend?

I too was perplexed about how one is supposed to know that it's a good time to start your approach. I suppose the solution is to arrive at the holding point a little early and listen for a while. I would have thought "joining the stack" and "leaving the stack" calls would help others with their situ...

The limitation on fuel quantities refer only to storage, not, strange as it might seem, to transportation. There is therefore no legal reason for forecourt staff to refuse to let you fill up. There remain two issues: 1. Forecourt operators routinely, for whatever reason, misinterpret the legal restr...

Introduction

Hi everyone, I've recently joined the LAA and I thought I should introduce myself before starting to post more generally. Some of you will know me from the Flyer Forums, where I post under the same nom de plume. I own and fly a Piper Warrior out of Carlisle Airport (aka Eddie Stobart International)....
