I've looked at the Oratex price list and it is scary to say the least but I take the point that it is a one hit wonder where no dopes and finishes are required to complete the job and a saving could be made there. The thing that does make it expensive for me is the fact that if I do the wings and ai...

Never been tempted to try it myself but a quick Google produced this: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/surestrip.php and further Googling found other aviation forums where it had been discussed but from what I read it's very time consuming and where the covering is of a certain age, rec...

Just a word of warning on the use of automotive plugs. Try and get the type that has a removable nipple and use a plug cap that fits over the threaded end of the plug. I've had nipples come unscrewed and caps come off of nipples in flight, all due to vibration. If you do have to use spark plugs with...

Aldi have a stand alone unit on special offer for tomorrow (28th Aug). In the immortal words of Victor Meldrew "I do not believe it"! I've been asking Aldi for the last couple of months if there's any prospect of this item (or similar) becoming available soon and the answer even as late as last wee...

I've bitten the bullet and ordered one via Amazon and at £23.99 including p&p, it seems a fair price. Thanks to everyone who offered ideas on how to use such things as mobile phone and web cameras. I'll remember those ideas just in case I'm away from base and ever have a need for an emergency inspec...

Boroscopes/endoscopes - aircraft inspection
Hoping to pick the brains of those of you that may have purchased or used the cheap (£30 approx) boroscopes/endoscopes that plug into a laptop via the usb and used to inspect the less accessible locations in an airframe. Do they provide good images? Are the LEDs bright enough to illuminate the targe...

Further to my post regarding the rubber inlet manifold sleeves/boots being degraded by ethanol in fuel and that the silicone variant would not suffer the same fate. Today I received my "silicone" boots which I'd ordered online from a long established VW parts supplier and was shocked to find they we...

I can't positively identify ethanol in fuel as the cause but I've now found that one of the rubber boots that connect the inlet manifolds on my VW engine has failed. If I hadn't been checking the spark plugs for indications of lean/rich mixture, I might have missed it but as all the plugs on two cyl...

Glass fibre fuel tanks - degradation.
The fuel tank in my VP1 has started to leak from the top of all places but the worrying aspect of this is that it leaking at all. Constructed of glass fibre at the same time as the aircraft was built some 30 odd years ago (the top of the tank forms the top of the fuselage aft of the firewall), I wou...

Will, I think you may be referring to a device I believe was originated by Tony Oliver as a mod to the SR4s on his Fred (G-OLVR). I have a diagram of the set-up somewhere that he gave me some 20 odd years ago and consists of a 3v dry cell battery wired via a switch into the primary coil of one mag a...
