If you have a few million to waste have a go!!! Radio spectrum management is International and not National. All National regulatory bodies have to conform to internationally agreed guidelines, rules and regulations. Take a look at http://www.itu.int/ITU-R/index.asp?category=information&rlink=rhome&...

Since Marconi started playing with his spark transmitter the government has always required its citizens to hold a licence to use any radio frequencies. Even the Ministry of Defence needs to hold a licence (or equivalent) to use frequencies reserved for MoD use. So, if you are required by law to hol...

I saw all those abbreviations for aircraft categories which the requirement don't apply to, but wondered if that only applied to aircraft on the "F" register.

I suppose we will just have to wait and see.

France and ELTs etc

This was mentioned some time ago, but this is the official promulgation. All aircraft (with very few exceptions) need a 406MHz ELT /PLB for flying in France from 1st Jan 09.

If you are really stuck I may have some you can have but it will need replacing later in the year (tail plane recovering this winter). Not a full reel but can check if you are interested.

A friend of mine has a private strip in (or on the boundary of) Odiham ATZ. He operates without problems but calls by telephone or radio before departing. I think you just need to talk to the military ATC and agree on "ops procedures".

Your observations are correct regarding the two finishing techniques. I had my wings recovered last year and used the more "traditional" Butyrate finish. I still achieved an excellent shine on the wings after using polishing compound and wax polish. My main reason for sticking with Butytate was for ...

Give Joint Aviation Services Ltd a call:

They do a very good "power by the hour" scheme (50 hrs per year) which provides full hull cover for a very reasonable premium.

If you are using "ordinary stuff" you will probably find you are losing up to half your transponder transmitter power in the coax cable (same goes for received signal).

If you ever find you can't be detected/identified use a better performance coax.

I am not that familiar with the C42 but a quick Google search says the primary structure is aluminium covered with composite sheets. That sounds "similar" to my Vagabond - steel tube structure but covered with fabric instead of composite. I get excellent radio performance with my wideband (118-136MH...

I suggest a combination of improvements will give you increased range: 1. Use lower loss coax cable from Icom to antenna (as short a run as possible) 2. Ensure groundplane is as large as practicable 3. Invest in a better comm antenna instead of the stub antenna you now have 4. Ensure the antenna mou...

Molex UK are based in Farnham, Surrey. It may be worth asking them (or their UK distributors) if they have any in local stock. Alternatively, RS Components do have them but they are part of their "extended" range. Have you tried calling some avionics shops? They may have some in their "box of bits"....
