(Though this is also a reduction drive, so doesn't address Basil's engine mounting issue.)

Re: Briggs and Stratton aero engines
Hi Basil, if you remove the flywheel, as I believe is done on the Luciole B&S engine, I think you can shave a lot of weight off: I've seen a weight of 23kg quoted for the 625cc. Perhaps a corresponding weight loss could be achieved on the larger one...

Re: Briggs and Stratton aero engines
I talked ages ago to a couple of guys who used the B&S engines on hovercraft. I can't remember who I corresponded with (need to check back on an old computer), but it might have been these folk: http://britishhovercraft.com/Buy-A-Hovercraft/Briggs-Stratton-Hovercraft-Engines.aspx From my conversatio...

Are the thermostats working? (Eliminate the obvious ) And are the gauges/senders OK? (If perchance the temps were actually OK, but the readings wrong, then you might regret trying the raise the temperatures...)

Re: VW pulled stud
I thought I could recount the outcome... We decided to attempt this task in situ. We acquired a 1/2UNF × 10mm case saver (or rather a set),a shiny new 29/64inch drill, and a 1/2 UNF taper tap. We plugged all the orifices we could see with rag and tissue, moistened with WD40 so debris would stick to ...

Something like this, but with a longer hose, perhaps?

Re: VW pulled stud
Thanks for all the advice. I spoke to Barry Smith and he was very much in favour of case saver inserts (rather than helicoils). He did say that the Haynes manual torque figures are for 10mm studs, so are far too much for 8mm. (To quote him approximately "The Haynes manual has been responsible for bu...

Bill, good point -- I'm not sure: one of the other chaps was doing the nuts. I'll check... Thanks for the reminder.

VW pulled stud
We were torquing up the newly refurbished cylinder heads on our D9 last night...and one of the studs pulled out of the crankcase. Has anyone had experience fitting "case savers"? (e.g. http://www.machine7.com/section.php?xSec=2784&jssCart=dd728a8eed5a3f7e4800edc8385d92d8 ) Is this a straightforward ...

Can I ask where you're heading to near Naples? I've got a friend (Italian) with a plane in that neck of the woods... I'm heading that way myself next week, but sadly by car.

To be honest, I'm not sure which mark of DC headset I have! Just a bog-standard one...though when Richard did the conversion, he also supplied new gel seals. The electronics come from here: http://www.headsetsinc.com/ANR_kits.html Richard can be found here: http://www.anrman.co.uk/ANRconvkit.html By...

Re: Recommendations for Headsets
I've got a pair of DC headsets converted to ANR by Richard Holder (you can buy the kit to do this yourself if you are handy with a soldering iron; can supply Richard's details if you want). Very happy with these: I use them in an open-cockpit aircraft and can hear the radio!

Re: Leburg Ignition - Battery Replacement
I give it two primes, eight blades with the throttle at idle position, then swing with throttle open slightly...might not start first go, but usually not difficult. Someone said to me that when these engines were cold, they needed to be wet (i.e. don't worry too much about flooding); and when they w...
