Cylinders and heads don't look any better at cooling than the stock VW. Therein lays the problem ... HP=heat. If you can't shed it, the the engine cannot produce it sustainably.

I've always run VW's on good quality 20W50 such as Morris Magnol. I certainly know that mineral rather than synthetic is preferable.

It really rather depends on your inspector. The more pragmatic ones take the view that if you rebuild the engine and it performs OK for the five hours required ground running, that's good enough. Others seem to want you to be a fully qualified auto engineer and evey part of the engine tested! Sensib...
