Fair point, Bill. My philosophy was this - because of the initial ground running that I would inevitably have to do and because a good oil such as Millers would have lots of anti-wear and anti-scuff agents, there was a chance that I would glaze the bores rather than bed in the rings during the initi...

Hi, I don't know if this helps but I have just rebuilt a VW 1834 (re-ground crank, new oil pump etc) and on its first run I remember the oil pressure initially rising to about 90 psi but then starting to reduce within 2 or 3 minutes. I am not familiar with VWs and I have no idea whether my engine is...

Just to say that, thanks to all the above very sound advice and the generous loan of some tools from Rob Swain's partner in aviation crime, I have now done the job successfully without tearing even one strand of the fabric on the wings. The holes are drilled and the new bushes are currently being ma...

Coils for use with Leburg ignition
When I bought my Leburg system in 2008 from David Mickleburgh, he recommended that I use 4 Honda CBR 600 ignition coils in place of the 2 Ford Visteon or Zetec coils to reduce the total weight and he supplied a wiring loom to suit the Honda coils. I am about to submit the MOD 2 & 3 Forms for the Leb...

Thanks, Welshman. I'm very new to wood and have never owned or seen a router in action but what you suggest sounds as though it should be perfectly straightforward. Thanks also to you, Rob. I am indeed turning a Series 1 into a Series 2. I'll certainly give you a call tomorrow (Saturday) because not...

Gentlemen, Thank you so much for your most helpful replies. What you suggest makes perfect sense; my only concern is why I was unable to come up with such ideas myself! Because the aircraft is assembled and there is not much space, I shall pursue your suggestion Stuart but, if possible, incorporate ...

How do I accurately enlarge existing holes in wood?
I need to increase the diameter of some aluminium bushes in a wooden bulkhead and also in the wing spars, from typically 0.75" to 1.0". The bulkhead is 0.75" thick with 0.25" ply on both sides (1.25" total). The spar is 1.5" thick. It is relatively easy to cut a very smooth 1" hole in wood from scra...

Foggy/Mike, many thanks to you both for these suggestions and leads which I shall store away and come back to, probably in the winter. My main aim now is to fast-track the refurbishment and get the VP-1 flying this summer (before I find that I am suddenly too old and have lost my medical!). After th...

Bob - glad to have been of some help. Foggy - what an elegant exhaust system you have; something I might aspire to after I have got my VP-1 flying! Unfortunately, with the current stub exhausts I can't realistically fit a lambda sensor or I would ask to hire your kit. I tried a Gunson CO analyser bu...

Bob, I don't think the PM worked (seems to have vanished from my system altogether) so I'll try and post the images here. John P.S. Do check the carb lid for warping, they are very prone to it but can be machined/filed flat again (with some difficulty!) http://www.pracproms.com/Flying/carb_210.jpg h...

Thanks again, Foggy. It was indeed Pete Yeo with the Sonerai. He well remembers you and the Fred at Kemble (and also some deal involving a cloth helmet and a radio!). Pete and I have done a deal of our own and I have secured the Solex carb which is great news because I'm not sure that mine is recove...

Rob/Foggy, Thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply and point me towards this lead. I have emailed Pete to see if he still has the carb. (Still very new to the LAA and rebuilding VW engines, I had never heard of theSamba.com!) Kind regards, John. P.S. You are truly a mine of information on ...

Solex 32 PHN-1 Carb Wanted
Has anyone a Solex 32 PHN-1 sidedraft carb that they would be willing to part with? The one fitted to my 1834 VW has a very warped top cover and I am not relishing the prospect of trying to mill it flat!
