This has been a good reminder for me to check when we last changed our batteries!
Michael, Are you sure you're priming enough before you start? Ours normally starts very easily from cold; can be finickety when warm. But it likes a good feed before cold starts!

Re: First Aircraft - any suggestions?
If you cast your search net to mainland Europe you might find some Tecnams (which are lovely!) that fall into your price range: have a look at http://www.planecheck.com

Re: Aerovee overhaul
Although not local to you, you could try talking to Ken Ballington ( http://www.ukaircraftparts.com/ ) who has a lot of experience with different incarnations of VWs. Out of interest, have you got CHT sensors on all the cylinders? If not, it might be worth trying this, to see if you are getting some...

Re: Building advice sought
Gary, is there any reason the Brugger Colibri is not on your list? Seems to be a generally well-liked little aircraft. There are Corby Starlets being built in the UK at the moment, so these guys must have got wood from somewhere...there's an active builders Yahoo group, so you could ask there. (Ther...

CAA consultation on deregulating single-seaters
In case anyone has missed it, the CAA is proposing to extend the present single-seat deregulated (SSDR) category, introduced in 2007, to include all single-seat microlights . It has opened the consultation here: http://www.caa.co.uk/default.aspx?catid=1350&pagetype=90&pageid=15117 This opens up some...

Re: Airspace app wins NATS approval
I loaded this onto my Android phone, which is steam age as these things go (Orange own-brand, running Android 2.something) ... and it seems to work fine. It is slow to start up, so don't give up if the opening screen lingers for a while. Not as slick as some other software, but pretty good for a fre...

Re: HVLP kit
No...immediate plans for its use got overtaken by events (the syndicate decided to have the wings completely recovered next year, and the fabricer will do the paintwork -- so no need for "restorative" work). But I'm still interested in how good they are for future use!

Re: Availability of Spruce
Hi THawk As noted above, try finding a sympathetic mast builder. Last year I visited this place near where I live http://www.collars.co.uk/ with a friend of mine who was building a boat and got his mast from them -- I went along to see if they had suitable stuff for aircraft application. The manager...

Re: Frequency Cards that used to come with charts
I should have said: I work in typesetting/publishing...so I'm used to delivering printed information, generating PDFs, etc., and we have high-quality laser printers here. That said, it looks sharp on-screen when zoomed, so it could be that the (pointless) colour background is screwing up the print r...

Re: Frequency Cards that used to come with charts
It's rubbish! I printed it on a high-resolution laser printer, and the text is blurred, and not at all legible! I looked at the source on the website, and it seems to be a PDF, so there is no excuse why this shouldn't print sharply. They could probably make life easier by having it monochrome, with ...

From a conversation with our engineer yesterday, it seems that the US of A is sticking with the existing freqency spacing...so we can sell our radios there when we have to replace them!

To be or not to be (semi)aerobatic?
In this month's Safety Spot the Titan Mustang is described thusly: "although not fully aerobatic, it is permitted to carry out simple rolling and looping manoeuvres within a +4.4/-2.2g limit". Now, this seems to imply some sort of semi-aerobatic category, and I recall Frances Donaldson writing (in h...
