Thanks, guys. I'll have a chat with Watts and see if they have an easy method of working out the OD of various tyre sizes. It is the method rather than the actual purchase of tyres that I'm really looking for.

Cheers

Naw, that is for car tyres. Aero tyres use a different sizing format that may have gone out of fashion. Morris Minor tyres are 5.20x14 in ye olde format or 145/14 in the new one.

Wheel/tyre sizes. Confusion!

OK, so it seems that a 6-inch between-rims-edges wheel with a 6-inch diameter rim is a 6.00x6 wheel. Now, how do I know what sort of tyre goes on it? there seem to be lots of variations in tyre size such as....4.10/3.50x6......13400x6.....15600x6.....etc. Sooooo, how do you know what the shape/diame...

42 grammes in wheel-half bolts. 6 bolts at 7 grammes lighter per bolt. I wonder why they supply them about 8 threads too long?

I took advice from Mike Birchill (G-PFAF) and cut all but the last 2 exposed threads off of all the bolts and saved about another pound of weight. Strange that the FRED plans still allow commercial grade bolts, although I have changed them ALL for AN hardware for the sake of simplicity. I'm lucky to...

Timw well spent

I replaced some steel spacers on the FRED undercarriage with aluminium ones that took me all day to lathe up. About 6 hours work to do it but I've saved a massive 4.5 oz!
Mt wife said that having a poo before every flight would've saved more weight. :?

G-ORAS. Does anyone know the owner?

I've tried G-INFO and then the phonebook to get in touch with the owner of G-ORAS but with no luck. Could anyone help me get in touch with him to talk about FREDs?
Cheers

Hmmm. From what he has said, that might be too expensive. I think he has enough heads to work with, just not enough holes for plugs!

Does seem a good price, though.

Drilling VW heads in the UK

Does anyone still do it? I know someone after a set of heads for "less than the price of a small villa in France", ie home-machined.

Does anyone have a complete jig?

PS Ron, have you still got that head of mine from last year? Did you ever get anywhere with it?

Cheers

Either will do! :D Anyway, I've googled but not found the 'full story', just some links to references on the subject. It appears that I'll need some 4047 rod to fix any fins on. Silly question time. Since this would be for a FRED with no firewall-forwards plans, does this fall under 'best practice' ...

Welding fins onto VW heads.

Having been given a 'dropped' head to play with, I was wondering if anyone had experience of which TIG rod to use (4047?) and whether there was any advantage to adding extra fin area at the same time.
Options, opinions, suggestions, links etc etc. Anything would be welcomed.

Deri Gardner is a VW-aero expert but is just north of Cardiff. He is a PFA inspector. Any good?

Failing that, I travel to Poole quite a lot and have done a few engines. I'm not the expert on them but may be able to help.

Similar thing when I tried to arrange for some of my ATC group to have a look round my B757 when it was parked up. High viz vests, insurance, passport detais in advance, one pass holder per visitor and finally a risk-assesment letter.
