Engineering Dept Performance
I would just like to publically thank the LAA engineering dept (Maxine and Andy Draper were the one's I corresponded with) for turning around both an annual permit and a mod application for my syndicate very rapidly indeed. How Andy managed this whilst he was on holiday, I have no idea. It was a ver...

Trevor said... Electric motors: compact, lightweight, smooth, powerful, and reliable. Almost perfect! Trevor - agreed. Electric motors are almost perfect, although I am sure some 'aviation specific' minor adaptations could help with the last few percentage points towards total perfection (whatever t...

You probably won't find a bigger fan of aviation combustion engines, I have a library of books on Hooker and Fedden and a bit of an Olympus engine (compressor blade from a Concorde or a Vulcan), and a excellent 912ULS at the front of my aeroplane. But COME ON, all combustion engines are SOOO 20th Ce...

We tend to avoid Avgas whenever possible, but it is not always possible when touring away from home. If we manage to keep it below 10% of the fuel total in 100 hours, we simply service the engine on an early-rather-than-late sort of basis. You only have to have a look at the '912 on Avgas' internal ...

Peter This change would definitely help me and lots of people I know, although I am just a flight test away from upgrading NPPL(SSEA) to JAR PPL! Is my shiny new Class 2 medical I got for the PPL okay for the job? Could you hazard a guess on when the changes might come into being, and when they do, ...

I can say from personal experience over 50 hours or so that a 6 foot 3 inch (or 1.88m) pilot can easily fit into a SportCruiser (SC3) with room to spare. It depends on your leg/body proportion, and on the rake of your upper half. The adjustable rudder pedals help here if you want a laid-back positio...

Used it no problem about 3 years ago for entry. Typical laid-back French airfield (ie good facilities, no much going on, minimal papework). When we were there there was some building work, so temporary buildings were in use. It was a hot and hazy day, we were glad of our GPS, and we were very glad t...

I have sucessfully operated a 600Kg SportCruiser out of a 280m long grass strip, with a downward slope and wires on one approach. The other aircraft homed there is a CT microlight (450Kg). The SportCruiser is famous for its slow flight capability but being heavier than a microlight, but we absolutel...

Our build was comprehensively insured during the build. It was a good idea because the kit was often in the charge of others, and transported from place to place. It was done by H R Jennings, and cost about 420.00 GBP/year. They wanted to know all sorts, like if there was heating, and if there was a...

Cutting open oil filters
Rotax maintenance schedules say you should inspect the filter paper inside old filters. Do people really do this in practice? If so, anybody know of an effective way of doing this without necessarily spending 50.00 quid plus on a special 'can opener'. I appreciate using a hacksaw is not recommended ...

The internal combustion engine is way past its sell by date. I would expect the great and the good of the LAA membership, and the engineering executive, to be heavily researching electric motors and electric energy storage for LAA planes. Forget about controlled explosions of flammable liquids, so l...
