S-18 (Thorp T-18C-W) plans

I have a set of plans for the Sutherland S-18, a variant of the Thorp T-18C-W which I will never build. The licence to build is 'not transferrable' so these are of little more than perhaps academic interest to someone. Accordingly I offer them free of charge and only ask £15 to cover UK shipping cos...

Re: Magneto 500hr check/overhaul

If it's a Bendix I agree with Mike Newall. The relevant Service Bulletin is SB643B wherein it states "...must be inspected every 500 hours..." but that it's written into a SB not an AD makes it discretionary not mandatory.

No idea about other magneto manufacturers, though.

Re: Compass erroprs

Even without the magnetic case closure I'm pretty sure the phone itself will produce a similar result. I considered adding a smart phone at TDC (single seater) to use as a PAW radar display but it badly affected the compass just below.

Re: Jacking up a wood+fabric aircraft

How heavy is the Minicab tail end when on the ground? Can you lift it? If so you might be able to arrange a couple of trestles/saw horses of suitable height and suitably padded, one to go under each wing and probably close to the root and probably aligned with a wing rib. Lift the tail (support on a...

Re: An open letter to the leadership of the LAA

Even if the CAA mandates something, and that something would probably be ADS-B out, there would (probably) be exemptions based on airspace classification and aircraft technical limitations just as there are in FAA land. So in much of the airspace where the lighter end of GA operates a mandate would ...

Re: An open letter to the leadership of the LAA

A contentious post, Piers. You don't use the 'M' word but you're talking about mandating the fitment of electronic conspicuity. I have no difficulty with the encouragement of EC but I most certainly do have difficulty with a mandate. I have no knowledge of the circumstances which led to the recent f...

Re: Pilot Coaching Scheme.

At the AGM it was stated that over 75% of the membership thought the PCS was a good idea, yet only 8% have used it. Why? Just a guess, but it's easy for people to opine, if asked, that some thing is a good idea whilst having no thought of making use of the thing . Frankly, an 8% uptake seems to me ...

Re: Finding inspector in Bristol area?!

Good luck with that map. Out of interest I entered my own postcode and got this: Unfortunately we could not locate any inspectors in the area you requested (IV19 XXX). We have used NN13 5YD instead. [edit] Oops. There are instructions on how to use? Who reads instructions? Well, maybe I should in fu...

Re: Rally 2017 Multiple Landing Slots

Have to agree with Paul Lowry's post. Particularly for those who fly slower, VFR machines from the more distant parts of the country and requiring multiple fuel stops to get there, the slot booking requirement is one of the biggest disincentives to visit the Rally.

Have you searched G-INFO? According to that of the current owners one is on the Isles of Scilly and the other in Penzance.

Re: FABRIC COVERING

John I don't know where you are in the North of Scotland but I know two LAA inspectors in the IV postcode area who COULD do this but they're busy people so I don't know that they WOULD take it on. I'm not saying you have to get an inspector to do the work but they will have a good understanding of w...

Re: Aluminium Priming

Well, while ALCLAD should be OK against surface corrosion you'll be breaking that aluminium skin at each rivet hole and on every edge. So if you don't live in an arid country the routes are there and many for moisture to get in and get to work. Consider too, your investment. Not saying your building...
