I've obtained clarification of the German situation post 31/3/2008. In general most trips should be possible with mode A/C or even with no transponder. Mode S is required for the following cases for VFR flights: (5) For the following VFR flights, aircraft shall be equipped with an SSR transponder: 1...

Most of the RVs are going for the Odyssey PC680 recommended by Vans.
About 7 kg, 17AH, rated at 500A for 20 seconds.
You should be able to source one in the UK for about £90.

A quick dig into the CAA site has found the guidance material. It can be found at http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/1688/Language%20Proficiency%20Process_examiners.pdf Unfortunately the document won't let me cut and paste extracts, but it does say that FEs, CREs and TREs will be able to informally assess pe...

As things stand, instructors don't have any authority to sign off language competence. I believe examiners will be able to assess people at level 6, but those I've spoken to have not received any forms or guidance material yet. I'm a bit confused over the initial level 4 validity period, as neither ...

I've just had a quick rummage and dug out a Telex TEL-66C

It was originally attached to a 90 channel valve radio in a very old Cessna.
PM me if you want it.

Another possible line is your local university. Most engineering labs have a tensiometer, and the metalurgy labs usually have an analysis capability.

Good practice for an undergrad.

When Alcan pulled out of Banbury a few years ago, the labs split off as a separate company. They can be found at http://www.wmtr.co.uk/. Beyond that, I have no specific knowledge of them. Tensile testing should be easy if a suitable coupon can be cut from the old part, but that won't neccesarily rev...

Try LAS. I got one from them - quite reasonably priced for such a large tome.

It's only for microlights. You may be sub-450kg but the KR2 does not qualify on wing loading etc. as a microlight. It's not possible to have a noise certificate for other permit aircraft, as there isn't any requirement or basis under which one could be issued in the UK. That's my understanding anyway.

Monel is normally specified for corrosion resistance together with quite good strength.
I'd take AC43 Chapter 7 as chapter and verse on hardware selection, as recommended by the LAA engineering department.

It can be found here.

I have heard that the French are more stringent on kit-builts.
For example, they allowed the Vans standard kits but not the quick-build versions.

Some altimeters have a keeper plat under the setting knob, whereby removing the plate allows you to pull out the setting knob and adjust the altimeter without setting the pressure sub-scale (or vice-versa, I can't remember). Obviously doing that won't address a faulty capsule in the altimeter, but m...

Does anyone know what the situation will be with clubs that operate orphaned types? Other than the concession for single seaters like the Tiger Club's Turbulents, permit restrictions don't allow 'hire or reward' operations. French clubs don't seem to have a problem hiring out CNRA types (their equiv...

Gary,

The published list is on
the engineering section
The list is a bit out of date, so you may need to check with engineering.
If that's the new Hartzell blended aerofoil, then I think Hartzell recentl published a list of tested combinations, which should help with your application.
