Re: Oshkosh 2018

A Nipper would certainly get noticed in the US. I can only find reference to 2 of them having been registered in the exhibition category, both factory built. Given the cost of shipping 2 ways and dis-assembly/re-assembly involved; I'd suggest it was more practical to buy an aircraft over here for yo...

Re: Replacement for a ATR500 radio

The Trig TY91 has 9 memory frequencies, fits a 2.25" panel opening and has very good reports.

Re: RV10 or Sling4 or BearHawk or ???

The Bearhawk is a good aircraft, but quite a different mission profile compared to the RV. Both good load haulers but a slower rag and tube back country vs a long range IFR capable tourer. The RV factory support is one of the best and there is a big community of completed aircraft and satisfied owne...

Re: Oil filters

The K&N HP-1002 filter fits the ~108 Champion adapters. It is a smaller diameter and has all the safety features of the certified aviation versions.
I have been using it on an O-320 for the last 3+ years with no issues.

Re: Nav radio for IFR

That sounds like they mean using a VOR receiver and display using an EFIS rather than a dedicated CDI/Glideslope.
The SL30 can display From bearing or CDI on its own display, so presumably that would be an acceptable back-up to the EFIS display (though not for glideslope).

Re: Equivalent Metal Materials

BS 2L 65-1959 appears to be long obsolete.
From what I can see, it appears to be replaced by L167 and L168 for sheet or bar/extrusion respectively.

This is basically a 2014 grade with minimum yield about 350 MPa and A5 elongation >7%

Hope that helps.

Re: Equivalent Metal Materials

BS 2L65 is a (mainly) copper-Aluminium alloy. The nearest ASTM grade is more likely to be 2024. The strength and elongation properties are very much affected by heat treatment, so you really need to know that if you are looking for a substitute. 2024 is mostly available in T3 or T4 tempers as rod, b...

Re: Minimum oil level?

There's no hard and fast rule. The CC340 Titan engine that CubCrafters use only has a 4 qt sump to save weight. If you're burning half a litre per hour or doing lots of zero/negative G manoeuvres, then you might want to err on the side of a bigger margin. Filling to 6 and topping up when it reaches ...

Re: Bringing an aircraft from Spain

Unless you want to take the wings off and trailer it back, it would make most sense to get it back in annual on its current registration, arrange insurance and fly it back. It's not practical to get a UK permit initial issue while abroad. I would also make sure that it doesn't deviate significantly ...

Hi John,

Have a look at Mr Mundy's shop at Lelystad http://www.pilotshop.nl/contents/en-us/ ... harts.html

He delivers to the UK regularly for a reasonable cost.

Re: Vans RV4

You!ll love it. I've had two. One was 150 hp and fixed pitch the other 180hp and VP. The first one won on lighter handling and was in no way under powered. The second was faster and still a lot of fun. For basic 'Larosa' aeros they perform very nicely. Easy to maintain height or even gain it in a se...

Re: Titanium Metal Fittings

6AL-4V is actually grade 5. Grade 4 is unalloyed. Although the strength may be higher, the stiffness is only about half of the chromoly steel. That may not matter unless it is relevant to vibration issues or structural torsion or bending stiffness. You could recover the stiffness by increasing the t...
