So what is the practical solution to this ever present 'crud' problem? If Gascolators don't have filter screen material in them, is it possible to buy an appropriate material to filter out particles of a size that would get caught in float chamber valves etc. or would it merely move the problem upst...

For oil cooling, cheapest/lightest option is to duct air over the fins on the sump of the crankcase. http://s82.photobucket.com/albums/j279/foggythomas/?action=view¤t=P1000542.jpg Rounded edges on the intake to the sump fins (with oil cooler fitted at the back of the duct), ally sheet folded t...

Shows a good source of ready-made panels that you can adapt. Very cheap, too. Single-port head is easier to cowl with homemade top tinware.
I'll try to get a better shot of mine during the week.

I've never seen a cracked VW head that wasn't cracked in the fin area outboard by the exhaust port (ie. where the big head bolt sits) IIRC, the best bet is to get air to go through the vertical finned bits right up close to the rocker cover. http://s82.photobucket.com/albums/j279/foggythomas/?action...

If it helps, there is an NGK website that tells everything you ever need to know about plugs. As for the leads, I went to a scrapyard and got a load of Ford leads, removed the end fittings and made new leads to the correct length. VehicleWiringProducts sell suitable crimping tools. If you use resist...

David. Re 'no gauge, just using a dipstick before flight'. FRED has no gauge system at all and, since it has the tank in the front of the wing centre section, there is no way of viewing it other than an electric gauge or Stearman-type sight gauge. There is currently (and has always been like this) n...

Thanks, Mike. No reply on saturday so I'll try again on monday. Has anyone else tried cutting their own VW heads recently? I've discovered that the ACRO heads are cut at a different angle to the Peacock drawings. Makes it a lot easier to cut the plug seat using the ACRO method. It leaves more meat o...

VW sparkplug cutter replacement wanted.
Not really a 'sales and wants' post. I've got most of the way through remaking the kit for cutting the extra sparkplug hole into VW heads. I need to get the 1" flat faced cutter that gets pulled inwards to cut the recess for the sparkplug and socket to go into. It is drawn through from the piston si...

In terms of lavatory reading, I can heartily recommend a book by Carroll Smith called something like "Nuts, bolts, washers and plumbing" which contains everything you might ever need to know about nuts, bolts and fastenings. He designs and builds race cars (NASCAR etc) Nobody is ever likely to steal...
