Re: Stromberg carburettor

Robert . I assume that you have the Stromberg CD150 on your 1834cc VW . Do you also have the LeBurg electronic ignition system fitted ? If you do , then it pretty much rules out any ignition problems . Provided that your plug gaps are set around 0.035"- 0.040" . So , if you pull some of your spark p...

Re: Clutton FRED running costs?

FRED's simple wheel bearings don't last too long if you're towing for any distance. Good point there Steve . Just done a quick search and most FRED's do still seem to have the old 'wheelbarrow' type wheels , which I guess just revolve on plain bearings and not taper/rollers. @ Brian Hunt : This is ...

Re: Clutton FRED running costs?

I have a garage to keep it in to save on hangarage. I was just wondering if FRED was de-riggable , but I do just remember a donkeys years old photo of Eric Clutton's Vauxhall Viva with FRED hitched onto the tow-bar . 8) In which case Brian , your flying will be very cheap indeed . Proper old PFA st...

Re: Future of the Forum

Hey Bob . Whilst I fully realise that this a pretty quiet and civilised forum , it only takes something a little bit 'topical' to get it up firing on all cylinders . [ didn't we first meet here ? .. :D ] The nice thing about this forum is that it is only things pertinent to the LAA that get discusse...

Re: Liberty XL2 IOF-240 Engineer

I am seeking professional qualified help to get this problem sorted. Alastair , I'm a bit mystified . Is this U.S. version of a Europa on the LAA register as an aircraft approved by them to operate on an LAA administered PtF ? If it is , then you really need to be liaising with an LAA Inspector . D...

Re: Duralac/JC5A and Cromate confusion.

Hey Cliff . Firstly , don't let anything I say override your Inspector . As long as you're happy with him/her , that is the main thing . Also , don't despair if another Inspector's words don't tally exactly with those of your own Inspector . There is a whole plethora of products out there , made by ...

Re: Duralac/JC5A and Cromate confusion.

Hi Cliff, Duralac and JC-5A both do pretty much the same thing . But their main differences are their consistencies . Duralac will dry like paint , whilst JC-5A will retain its grease-like consistency . It depends really on the kind of assembly that it is you're using it for . If you apply it to the...

Re: LAA x BMAA

I actually don't know the answer to what Terry suggests , but I do feel that the BGA don't have quite the same need for being as unilaterally aligned as the LAA and the BMAA really should be . The BGA have got on and 'self policed' for many a long year and may not be in such a need to have their dup...

Re: If you haven't seen this: DH9 piece in The Mail

What on earth has come over The Daily Mail ! Printing such an interesting and factual article . And the pictures were superb . Have they lost the plot or something ?... :D Certainly a lot more interesting than the last article of theirs which had a [very] loose connection to aviation . [ I think tha...

Crikey ,,,,He's a bit of a boy old James isn't he ? Especially when you see on his website all the other things he's done... 8) Probably not the sort of guy you'd find doing clerical work in an office then !.. :D A bit of a pity that so few seem to come on here , as I found the link to his website q...

Re: Amanda Harrison solo to Australia in a Tiger Moth

How frustrating this must be for that poor girl . Let's hope that she realises that her supporters [ of whom I'm sure there are many] are all wishing an expeditious resolution may be found in the next week or so . Just a case of finding the right palm[s] to grease , I'm sure . Not being a 'twitterer...

Re: Amanda Harrison solo to Australia in a Tiger Moth

A good picture on p.14 of The Times today shows 'our gal' taxiing in Beirut . But in true Times/Telegraph fashion , the only show the pic. with no accompanying story .

Great to see Amanda back on the trail again though.. :D ..

Re: Instruments article feedback

Clive . There is a lot of sense in what you have written . I am sure that you pretty much echo the feelings of many LAA flyers in what you say . In which case then , may one assume that your response to Ian's suggestion ; Should the LAA impose a test? Ian Fraser Will also be a ; 'thanks but no thank...

Re: Letters : LA Mag, May'19

Hhhmmmm.....Interesting ! If you scroll back about 9 pages to Oct 2015 , there is a very interesting thread about Rotax engines and an article serialised from Oct '15 LA mag. It was written by CFS's head guy at the time , Jonathan Porter . Many , including myself , were rather critical , not of Jona...

Re: Amanda Harrison solo to Australia in a Tiger Moth

Well done Mike for putting this one on here ! I'm sure that many LAA'ers will be following Amanda's progress with great interest . I know that there are many aspects of life which have changed beyond recognition since the 1930s , but once you really ARE alone up there in an open cockpit biplane , th...
