Re: Compass erroprs

(a)When has that ever happened (and I'll tell you the answer if you like)? If the GPS constellation is being jammed then we've got bigger problems to worry about than a poxy wet compass and I'll probably be in a bomb shelter instead of puttering around in a homebuilt. (b)I think I did mention a magn...

Re: Compass erroprs

Haha, I wonder how those with a vertical mount compass and no bubble manage when the electricity stops :D Yes, just chuck a magnetometer into the EFIS circuit and it'll calculate the wind for you. Or, as you've suggested, we can work it out using a whizz wheel (given track, heading, TAS and GS). But...

Re: Compass erroprs

I can't help but wonder why we (UK) still insist on equipping the aircraft with a compass. Sure, if it's your thing and you want to, then go ahead but mandating the fitment just seems daft to me. My panel design has an EFIS and an iPad, both of which will show me my magnetic track (which is all we'r...

Re: Electronic conspicuity article from the Feb edition of t

One thing, though... a number of early mode S transponders (mentioning no names, like Garmin) are not ES (Extended Squitter), a.k.a. ADS-B, capable. Yes, very good point, Rob. I'd forgotten that early Mode S transponders lacked the ES as all the new ones have it (and I've bought one that sounds lik...

Re: Electronic conspicuity article from the Feb edition of t

Having just read the article I'd like to point out a fairly glaring error in your table. Yes, it is true that P3I cannot 'see' ADSB, CAP 1391 etc but the PAW unit does more than just transmit and receive on 896 MHZ (P3I); it also receives on 1090 MHZ. SO, it can 'see' ADSB In and CAP1391 (I'm assumi...

Re: Backup Instruments Dynon D2

The use of other electronic backup instruments must be approved by LAA Engineering, e.g. by means of a modification approval or indication of the approved configuration in the type’s TADS. Note that as additional models are investigated as part of modification approvals, these will be listed here i...

Re: Jacking up a wood+fabric aircraft

I don't know if something like the ones in this Kitfox thread would be any good. Basically just some cheap bottle jacks and a bit of welding:

Re: LAA Forum

I had the same thing, Colin, and it was a repetition of problem experienced during the rally. I click on the Forum and it starts to load but then the progress strip stops (at about 10%) and goes to sleep for ever more. Maybe the ladies in the office need a yellow sticky on the server power button th...

Re: Leburg ignition

It sounds very like all the information I've read on the Rotax 912iS engines, if LEDs are used for the LANE lights, instead of 'normal' filaments. Apparently the LEDs require so little juice to glimmer that a few 'resident' mA can cause you to think the lights are still illuminated. The Rotax soluti...

How about the MGL Discovery lite? 7" screen and seems to do all the other stuff you'd like.

Re: Is installing a CO detector a mod?

Next project after that will be FLARM/ADSB-in traffic info with a box such as Power-Flarm. Although I don't even own an aircraft (yet) I've done a fair bit of research on this and would recommend you take a look (if you haven't already done so) at the Pilot Aware kit. Using a simple USB 'converter'...
