Re: Welding your own fusalage
I think a small set of oxy-acetylene bottles is acceptable. Certainly used to be. Oxy-propane is another option. People have huge cylinders of propane at home for cooking and heating. As regards non-combustible compressed gasses at home I have a half-full diving cylinder under my stairs - it's been ...

Re: Welding your own fusalage
I wasn't doing it for aircraft purposes at the time but I learned to gas and stick weld by doing a City and Guilds course (actually EMFEC at the time) at the local college. I was supposed to learn to MiG weld as well as part of the course, but limited kit and diabolical timetabling/organisation of t...

I have to admit I considered candle wax!Ian Law wrote:Dipping all bolts in hot beeswax is the quaint and appealing recommendation in the plans, but I haven't tried this yet!

Re: Protecting prop bolts with a wooden propeller.
No Prop ever came out from a reputable maker that was too tight on the bolts. Very interesting, but how tight is too tight? Or, of more use, what would be the correct clearance size for a 3/8 bolt? 25/64? 13/32? The bolts push in and out just with hand pressure or a very light tap. Your torque comm...

Protecting prop bolts with a wooden propeller.
I have a wooden prop on my RV6. The an6 bolts that hold it on are a close fit in the prop. This causes the cad plating on the bolts to wear off and the bolts to rust. I'm about to buy my third set of bolts: £75 - ouch! Anybody have any ideas how to stop this happenning again - short of drilling the ...

Re: Nikasil VW barrels?
I would do some weight and balance calcs before buying the nikasil barrels.
I'd hate to see all that money and effort spent only to have to put a lump of lead up front to bring the c of g forward again!
Would make for a nicely elegant motor all the same!

Re: Builder Course
I did the RV toolbox LAA course.
Thoroughly recommend it!
The electrics and avionics courses are very good too.
Just need the composites for RVs course to be run again - had a prior engagement last time it ran.

Have you tried the UK RV Forum?
http://www.rvforum.co.uk/
Hopefully you can get the link to work - it can be very hit and miss as the site seems to not like proxies and firewalls.

Re: Rivet gun choices
Gloster Air Parts sell excellent rivet guns. Call Diana on 01252 617484. Agreed. Gloster supply very nice (normally Avery) kit. Probably a good idea to call in the evening and talk to Pete to discuss your requirements before ordering. They supply several guns for different jobs, rivet sizes, techni...

Re: Bleeding Piel Emeraude brakes
Use a disposable 20ml syringe. . Or a 60 or 100ml. You can probably backfill the entire system without having to refill the syringe (and risk bubbles) then. I attach the syringe using thin clear pvc hose - basically thin windscreen washer hose. Just fits on the end of the syringe and over the tiny ...

Re: Recommendations for Headsets
The Sennheiser ANR headsets are very good value, and work well. I know a commercial pilot who uses a set for work flying 737s, so they appear to be durable enough. Only issue I have had is the older model ones sit on rather than over the ears which I found uncomfortable (always feel like they are go...

Re: Radio Mandatory Zone (size of a CTR) Southend from 18/7/
I'll come clean up-front and say I live far away from Kent and Essex. However, I have visited family and fiends in Kent and have flown through the Southend environs. Knowing how stroppy they have been getting of late I made sure I called them up. When going south in the morning they were pretty disi...

Re: Leburg Ignition - Battery Replacement
I think Dave Mickleburgh recommended changing them annually as they were so cheap.
If I still had G-BAPP I would probably change the system A battery one year and System B the next and alternate like that!
