Re: Rotax 912 pre-heater

Not as such, but when ambient temperatures are in single figures (Centigrade) I prestart heat with a hair drier directed into the cowling for about 20 minutes. This primarily facilitates cold starting, and provides a small reduction in warm-up time. Tanis can do more harm than good if the heaters ar...

Re: Handheld radio - New purchase & Licence application

If the standard radio battery pack is left in place, then operation will default seamlessly to that battery when external power is lost. Which also means that if external power is used, one has to remember to turn off the radio (rather than just the Master switch) after use, or else the battery will...

Re: Handheld radio - New purchase & Licence application

Any external supply for the Yaesu handheld needs to be 9v, the same as the battery pack that it is substituting. I used one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-4V-38V-to-1-25V-36V-3A-Step-Down-Power-Supply-Regulator-24V-12V-9V-5V-UK-/122572089413?hash=item1c89dda845:g:f54AAOSwo6lWI2Do which has w...

Re: Rotax Article, LA mag, Oct '15

What makes this issue more disturbing is Rotax's 'one country, one agent' anti competitive policy. At least in relation to new engine supply, which could easily be used also to control genuine spares supply. There seem to be a blossoming grey-spares market however (including serviceable used parts)!...

Re: Jerry Cans

Depends how long you want to keep them. Cheap powder coated cans (eg Clarkes) don't last long until they need repainting, because when full they get wringing wet on the outside every diurnal temperature cycle, which in about 1 year lifts the external powder coating. The best that I had was some ex W...

Re: Advice please on installing the Bob Archer antenna Model

The full length of the aerial is only needed to tune it to the frequency (band). The lower c.1/3 to 1/2 of the arm of the aerial does most of the radio energy transmission, so that bit needs to be vertical (+/- 15 deg) in order to provide the required vertically polarised signal, the rest can be fol...

Re: Icom A6E

For those that have the A6 with ship's regulated power supply and plumbed in to a separate intercom system (rather than a direct connection to a headset, which was so problematic on the earlier A6s) could you confirm the earthing arrangements please. Earthing of the set would take place through the ...

Re: Visicover

I can't get a Visicover quote that is anywhere near Traffords' price.
This is for third party minimum legal cover only.
Maybe they're better on the value-added cover.

Re: Icom A6E

I've had the same issue (and solution, which isn't 100%) on the older A6 (actually an A24).
Disappointing to hear that the new 8.33 version hasn't been heavily improved, as has been suggested by Icom.
Would you bother again with this set given what you now know?

Jepp Flitetstar Software

Any one got an old Jeppesen Flitestar software disk no longer wanted?
Only need it for converting and uploading route files; up to date charts not required.

I've had excellent performance with a similar arrangement (A20 rather than A2), even operating at the low power setting of 1.5W PEP; better than many CofA installations! The downside is that on London Information (for example) higher power transmitters will always step on you. Who is going to point ...

Homebuilt" aircraft insurance

My third party premium generally goes down most years and did again this year. But then so does the number of hours flown.
Insurance is still more than fuel cost per hour!

Aeroshell Hat

Has anyone got surplus to requirement one of the old PFA/Aeroshell black peak-caps that were handed out free at the last (?) rally held at Cranfield?

Europa Classic cowls - free to good home!

I have a set of Europa Classic cowls, unused and untouched.
These are yours if you want them.
I may also have the spinner and backplate - somewhere.
Located in North Worcestershire (Junc 2 M42).

'Ye olde format' (5.20x14) remains current for crossply tyres. The newer format is for radials.
