Devon Strut Meeting - Thursday 12th December

Post by MikeM » Thu Dec 12, 2013 10:50 am

The next Devon Strut meeting is coming up this evening when Moorland Guide John Lowe will be our guest speaker.

“In the late evening of 21st March 1941, a returning RAF Hampden of Bomber Command crashed onto Dartmoor, in an area known as Hameldown. None of the young crew survived.

On that wind swept slope a memorial of monolithic granite stands witness to that tragedy. Inscriptions, one on each side, remind onlookers of the price that was paid by so many for the privileges that they entrusted into our care. Intriguingly, it was realised that the dates given on the memorial for the same incident, were different!

For over seventy years that was how it remained; until, that is, through diligent research, the Diary of a Dowager Duchess became available and the fascinating story of the ‘The Boys’ is about to be revealed.”

See you at the Ley Arms at 7.30, or earlier if you wish to eat at the pub before the talk, in which case please book on 01392-832341.
