LANCASHIRE LANDING WENT AHEAD SEE THE VIDEO!

Post by Bob Potts » Sun Jun 27, 2010 8:44 pm

The “Lancashire Landing” Beach Party will take place on Pilling Sands, Knott End, Morecambe Bay, Lancashire on the weekend of 4th-5th September 2010. The plan is to land on the beach on Saturday. Refreshments can be purchased in Knott End which is a short walk away. Later in the day we will then fly to Rossall Field (Tarn Farm) where we will move to the local village of Cockerham for an evening meal at the Manor Inn and refreshments of a stronger nature. Camping at Rossall will be free.

What is this all in aid of I hear you ask?

On the 25th of April 1915 one of the most gallant actions in the history of the British Army took place at ‘W’ Beach at Helles on the Gallipoli Peninsular. 1000 men of the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers stormed the beach under withering fire from the Turkish defenders. During the course of this action 6 Victoria Crosses were won by the Regiment. The Fusiliers took the beach but at horrendous cost. Of the first 200 men who landed only 21 survived. 600 men of the Battalion were killed or wounded. The beach was later re-named “Lancashire Landing” in honour of the Fusiliers. This action was later referred to the “6 VC’s before breakfast”.

The Fusiliers are still with us today and are now the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. They have an in house charity called the “Fusiliers Aid Society” which helps Fusiliers their widows and dependents financially when they have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own. This is particularly relevant in the current climate with our forces deployed on operations and the fact that the Regiment suffered a lot of casualties during a recent tour in Afghanistan.

All we ask is that you make a small donation of your choice to the charity. Mr Sutcliffe (Farmer) has waived the £3 landing fee at Tarn Farm and has asked that the monies go to this very worthy cause. Our Just Giving Page is at http://www.justgiving.com/Lancashire...ng-Beach-Party

The Bay Flying Club based at Rossall Field (Tarn Farm) are going to provide the logistic support for this event.

If the weather is bad we again we will postpone to next year. In other words we need to be flexible. We will be in consultation with HM Coastguard so these dates may be tweaked depending on their advice.

This is an unusual event that should be a lot of fun. It will be open to Light Aircraft, Microlights, Autogyros and Paramotors. Further details will be posted on this site in due course.

Please note that Light Aircraft returning to Rossall Field must be capable of landing on a 305metre strip so Short Take Off and Landing cabability is a must. Nearest AVGAS is at Blackpool. Fuel runs for MOGAS will be available. If you are unable to get in to Rossall then we will be glad to see you at Knott End on the Saturday anyway.

Further detailed instructions will be posted on this site prior to the weekend which must be read prior to attending. A decision as to whether to run the event pending weather will also be posted on this site by evening Thursday 1st June.

Landing Instructions for Lancashire Landing

Post by Bob Potts » Wed Jun 30, 2010 7:45 pm

Can all participants please check this forum to confirm whether the event will go ahead this weekend by evening of Thursday 1st July ie tomorrow!! If postponed will try again on next suitable weekend! :D

1. Introduction

The “LANCASHIRE LANDING” BEACH PARTY will take place at Pilling Sands, Morecambe Bay, Knott End, Lancashire, and at nearby Rossall Field/Tarn Farm on the weekend of 7th-8th August 2010. The event is a Northern Aviators organised event and will be open to General Aviation, Light Aircraft, Microlights, Autogyros, Paramotors and Powered Hang-Gliders.

2. Aim

The aim of the weekend is to give pilots/passengers the opportunity to enjoy a fun event, land on a beach landing area at Knott End, Morecambe Bay and to give support to the “Fusilier Aid Society” which is strongly linked to Lancashire.

3. Concept and General Idea

“On the 25th of April 1915 one of the most gallant actions in the history of the British Army took place at ‘W’ Beach at Helles on the Gallipoli Peninsular.

This is particularly relevant in the current climate with our forces deployed on operations overseas.
Our Just Giving page for the charity is at http://www.justgiving.com/Lancashire-La ... each-Party

The Bay Flying Club based at Rossall Field (Tarn Farm) are going to provide the logistic support for the event. They will provide key personell to allow the Fly In to take place. Airfield details for Rossall Field can be found on the following website
http://www.thebayflyingclub.co.uk/index.htm

Alternate Weekends

If the weather is unsuitable we have fallback dates of 7th/8th August and 21st/22nd August 2010. In other words we need to be flexible. We will be in consultation with HM Coastguard so these dates may be tweaked depending on their advice.

Charity Donations
A Charity bucket will be in situ at the Beach Landing Site at the Control point. Visiting pilots can make a donation when they land.

The donation is of your choice to the charity. Mr Sutcliffe (Farmer) has waived the £3 landing fee at Rossall Field/Tarn Farm and has asked that the monies go to this very worthy cause.

This event will last all day Saturday until late afternoon/early evening until approx 1900hrs

Aviators will then be invited to take off during the afternoon/evening for the short hop to Rossall Field where the plan is to pitch tents and go to the local pub (Manor Inn) for a meal and further refreshments. The Inn can cater for up to 150 Persons. Taxis will be required for the road move.

Safety Issues

Pilots returning to Rossall Field on the Saturday afternoon/evening must be confident of landing on what are very short strips i.e. 305 metres therefore large GA type aircraft will not be suited to land in such an area and light aircraft with Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) capability should only return to Rossall Field/Tarn Farm.

The 305-metre strip is roughly north-south. Please note that there is an area denoted by sand two thirds of the way up the strip, which denotes the extreme north of the usable runway. Pilots should not use the area north of this for their landing run, as it is a little bumpy and may cause damage to the aircraft.

Pilots must not stray into the Parachute DZ to the north of the field which is clearly marked on the Bay Flying Cub Website.

All attending pilots must not over-fly Knott End or Fleetwood in any circumstances, so that relations with the local population are maintained.

Pilots should note that the beach is featureless and very flat. It is therefore difficult to gauge your height when landing. Pilots should be aware of this on finals.

Members of the public use the beach and may wander up to the landing area. The marshals will police the public as far as possible but pilots should be aware of this extra hazard.

Horse Riders use the beach on a regular basis. All pilots should try and avoid overflying horses at low altitude and consider a go round if in doubt.

All pilots are to be extra vigilant when close to the landing area and keep a good lookout for other approaching aircraft in the area. Given good weather this event may be well attended by visiting pilots and common sense should be used if the circuit becomes busy.

5. Execution General Outline

As with all aviation events the Fly In is very weather dependant, and, not only this, it is tide dependent as well. Flexibility will be required by all participants for the fly-in weekend. The aim of this letter is to have all planning factors in place so that minimal further planning is required prior to the Fly In.

The event will be in two phases.

Phase 1 will be the setting up of a temporary airfield at Knott End Beach Landing Area, Pilling Sands where pilots will be invited to land, have refreshments in Knott End and make a charitable donation of their choice to the charity.

Phase 2 will be the recovery of all aircraft capable of landing at Rossall Field (Tarn Farm) on the late afternoon early evening of the Saturday where pilots are invited to pitch tents and make their way by taxi to the nearby village of Cockerham which is 3 miles away. An evening meal will then be available at the Manor Inn pub and further refreshments.

The Bay Flying Club will initially set up a beach landing area at Knott End, Pilling Sands on the morning of 3rd July 2010 to allow attending aircraft to land on a safe area without interference to the General Public. The temporary airstrip will be marked out and identifiable to visiting aircraft. A temporary Control point will be set up and manned for the duration of the event on Pilling Sands. This will provide basic airfield information i.e. wind speed and direction via hand held radio to all incoming and outgoing aircraft.

Main Body
The main body i.e. attending aircraft will arrive once the airfield has been established and adhere to instructions for landing given by the control point. No aircraft are to land at the airfield prior to the advance party setting up and establishing the temporary airfield on Pilling Sands.

Tasks

The event organiser and the control point staff will set up the temporary airfield and manage parking of aircraft.

6. Coordinating Instructions

Timings

Final Briefing at Rossall Field for Directing Staff 0845hrs
Road Party Departs for Knott End Beach Landing Site 0900hrs
Airfield set up 1030hrs
Comms Checks 1040hrs
Beach Landing Site Operational and Open 1100hrs
Fuel Runs from Rossall available from 1300hrs
Aircraft recover to Rossall Field by 1900hrs
Evening Meal at Manor Inn available from TBC

Runways

The temporary runway will be set up on Knott End Beach Landing Site at approx coordinates N53°56.60 W002°59.50 The runaway will have sufficient distance from Knott End in order to negate any disturbance to the local population. The runway will be denoted by a gate, which will be marked by 4 x traffic cones or similar. This will denote the runway threshold. A temporary windsock will be adjacent to this threshold to indicate wind direction. The gate will be aligned to that it is guiding aircraft into wind and may be moved accordingly. Pilots should land through this threshold/gate in accordance with the wind direction.

Circuits

All aircraft to join overhead at 1200ft QFE
Circuit height at 700ft QFE

If Wind Direction Westerly = Circuit to North R/H
If Wind Direction Easterly = Circuit to North L/H
If Wind Direction Northerly = Circuit to West L/H (finals follow Wyre estuary)
If Wind Direction Southerly = Circuits to West R/H (climb out follow Wyre estuary)

All Pilots are to avoid flying directly over Knott End and Fleetwood.

Aircraft Parking

All aircraft will be parked in accordance with the marshal’s instructions so as not to interfere with landing aircraft.

Aircraft should carry tie downs in case of breezy conditions

Action on Control Radio Failure- all approaching aircraft are to call blind whilst approaching/leaving or in the circuit. All pilots are to be vigilant for other aircraft in the area. This is particularly relevant with slow and fast moving aircraft in the circuit.

7. Service Support

Feeding

Pilots can walk into Knott End and buy food and refreshments in the town. The Bourne Arms will be happy to serve bar meals etc to visiting aviators.

An evening meal will be available at the Manor Inn at Cockerham.

Breakfast may only consist of a cup of tea at Rossall on the Sunday morning depending on available personnel and Logistics?

Fuel
There will be no Mogas at the temporary airfield and no Avgas. Those pilots wishing to refuel should do so at Rossall Field where Mogas runs will be available to local fuels stations. Pilots should report to the clubhouse, which is a caravan. We would prefer people to fuel up after 1300hrs on leaving the beach.

Those Pilots requiring Avgas will need to have sufficient fuel to get to Blackpool airport, which is the nearest Avgas retailer.

Cockerham Filling Station is Open from 0900hrs-1800hrs Sat –Sun there are further filling Stations in the area but these are further away.

Insurance
All participants are to have a minimum of 3rd party insurance giving at least the minimum coverage required by aviation law. All pilots attending this event are responsible for their own actions and must be not do anything to endanger others. The organisers cannot accept any responsibility for any damage to aircraft attending the event and pilots attending the event must conduct their own risk assessment before coming.

Radio

Handheld Icoms will be used at the Control Point. Spare charged batterys will be required. Pilots will be required to call blind as no service will be provided with the exemption of wind direction and speed. Control will only intervene on the radio due to safety issues in the circuit.

9. Locations

Pilling Sands (Knott End Beach Landing Area) approx N53°56.62 W002°59.53
Rossall Field N53.56 W002.50.5

Handheld Icom air band radio will be used for air to ground communications from Control to inbound/outbound air traffic.

Frequency
The Microlight frequency of 129.825 will be used. Alternate frequency will be safety com 135.47. In the event of a communications problem Pilots should continue to call blind to ensure other pilots are aware of their actions and intentions.

Gents,

After long discussion with our friends in Lancashire we are going to postpone to our new date of 21st-22nd August for this fly in. Having looked at several weather forecasts none of which tally it looks as though we could have showers and up to 17mph winds on the beach so discretion is the better part of valour!

It will happen eventually. Sunday looking good but tides against us! Watch this space!

LANCASHIRE LANDING POSPONED AGAIN!

Post by Bob Potts » Thu Aug 19, 2010 7:42 pm

I have discussed weather this weekend with our friends in Lancashire and again it is marginal with rain on Saturday and bright weather on Sunday but strong winds. We have decided to postpone again until 4th-5th September 2010. This will be our last window of opportunity this year to have this event and if it does not go ahead then, we will definately have it next year. We want conditions to be good for this unique event and make it enjoyable for you, that is why we have made the decision. If we have a weekend where we have one good day then we will make it a one day event. Thanks for all your patience with this and as I said originally we would have to be flexible. British weather eh!!! Roll on September!!

Thanks Nigel,

Saturday was great fun with lighter than expected winds. The beach was fabulous
and is without doubt a gem of a landing area that we have in the North of
England. All sorts of aircraft turned up including a Tiger Moth from
Huddersfield and a Cessna 172 and 182, Im not sure of the difference! We had a
Dakota fly by and two flights of the Red Arrows at the end of the day with the
second flight seeing us all on the ground and releasing smoke. It was good to
see a lot of Northern Aviators show up as well.

The Bay Flying Club were superb in running the event and the locals came out in
their droves to see what we were up to. This was the 4th attempt we had at
laying this on but the weather was not playing ball until this weekend and it
was worth the wait. If you have not landed here before you have certainly missed
out! Its unique! It was a shame that it clashed with the LAA rally at Sywell but
this was our last chance this year and we had to go for it. There was a lot of
interest from our LAA contingent but we will get more next year of that I am
sure.

The general consensus from the Bay Flying Club was that it should become an
annual event and I am sure we can make this one grow and put aviation in a good
light as well down there. So to those who did not make it this year for whatever
reason make sure you dont miss it next year. It was good to see both Micros and
Light aircraft mixing it in the circuit and the standard shown by pilots were
very high. One or two struggled to find the gate to fly through but we will make
it a bit more obvious next year (Red Bull Race Cones perhaps?)

We raised £217-00 at first count in donations to the Fusilier Aid Society and I
shall be contacting the Regiment Shortly to let them know how we did. You will
see one of the Fusiliers in the video at the end who was wounded in Afghanistan
last year.

Anyway enough of me prattling on here's the video, enjoy!
