Bolt Head Sunday May 4th. 2008
A hearty welcome is extended to all LAA Members to visit one of the most interesting and attractive locations in South Devon.
Flying began at Bolt Head in 1941 as a forward fighter base for the RAF.
RAF Bolt Head was operational from 1941- 1945. During this time Jack Nissental was based there and built and developed some very early radar stations. Following closure of the airfield the site was further developed as part of the Cold War early warning radar stations. Then in the mid 1950's it became a Regional Seat of Goverment.
The 620 metre strip that is used for light aircraft to this day runs parallel and to one side of the original wartime runway.
The Bunker is now in private ownership and remains in excellent condition and will be open on the day for guided tours.
Camping is welcome under the wing or there is a camp site a short walk down the road at Higher Rew Farm.
Light refreshments will be available for early arrivals on Saturday and full catering will be from 8am Sunday morning.
For PPR and a full briefing please call John Kempton on 01548 -842057 or Chris Howell on 07970-251386.
