Re: Swiss EAS rally 2012
I went to Raron last time they had the fly-in there, great scenary, friendly reception at the airfield and we stayed in a small hotel in the nearby town which was ok. Saturday evening went for a meal in a nice restaurant up a nearby mountain. The organisers had two minibusses taking people up, but we had a friend there withg a rental car so went with him . We had an extra passenger on the way down, one of the British Europa pilots who said the minibus driving was too scary!
We got stuck at Raron for a week, weather on Sunday was not good over Lake Geneva, it was fine in the valley where Raron was, but out over the lake was lowish cloud and rain,, you could fly over the lake but not get anywhere further north, we turned back and tried to go above, but that was no good either, so ended up leaving the aircraft there for a week, luckily our friend was still there when we came back so he gave us a lift to Zurich to catch an airliner home. Several others were stuck there for a few days or more, 3 or 4 Europas were leaving as we diverted back in, but they only got as far as Lausanne for a couple of days! When I returned a week later the weather was perfect, as it had been on the way down.
Flying in Switzerland is superb and quite straightforward. Lots of airfields to visit although check opening times, particularly on Sundays when some close at lunchtimes.
Hope its a good event, the last couple of EAS fly-ins Ive been to havent been that good with a low turnout, but they were combined with a sort of min aero-expo and not in such a nice place.
