I'll be there .... Popham seems to be magnetic to my aeroplane for some reason? I keep aiming for other places but fly-ins at Popham always seem to coincide with my time off and reasonable weather.

Bob
Can you confirm that camping is £2 per night for the Popham event, I had seen elsewhere that it is £5.

Bob
Just checked again on the Popham events listing (linked to through the LAA website) and it says £5 landing and £5 camping for the LAA regional rally.

I am not questioning the value of what's on offer, just seeking clarification of an obvious contradiction.

I went......... By road

I got there 11:30ish just as the first arrived by air and stayed till 15:30. No showers during that period and if it hadn't been for the stiff wind it would have been very pleasant. 20-25kts seemed to be the norm, almost straight down RW21. Watching the heavier aircraft bouncing around on climb out, showed that this was not a wind for the lighter end of the scale. I would guess that there were approx a dozen visitors flying in with a nice selection of RV's, One Design, Luscombe etc. If there is a demand I will post a few piccies

I was disappointed by the mini rally. There were lots of empty stands that gave the impression that traders had not turned up. Only display aircraft were Reality Escapade and Corvus Crusader, both well turned out. LAA consisted of the shop and nothing else. Usual models and book stands and that was it.

If it had not been for the large number of aircraft parking at Popham, I would have been over and done in a hour

The weather up in the north midlands was flyable for a short time mid afternoon. The wind was 25kn, cloud broken at 1000, lots of storms about and it looked very bumpy. I stayed on the ground. By evening we had rain, low cloud and wind. It has just about stopped now, but tomorrow is forecast is very poor!

I hope things are better down south. I am very disappointed I could not fly down, but well done for all the people who have put effort in. Maybe next year…

I flew into Popham on the Saturday when the wind, although pretty stiff, was mercifully straight down the strip as promised. A bit bumpy en-route but otherwise a reasonable flying day down south. It was a great shame that the event was scuppered by the weather. Even with a standard 'nice day' Popham Fly-in turnout it would have been a worthwhile event. I dropped into the inaugural Hertfordshire strut fly-in at Elstree on the way to Popham and oddly enough there seemed to be as many attendees there as there were at Popham. That's despite the brisk crosswind at Elstree.
