Nipples

Post by Nick Allen » Fri Oct 29, 2010 12:42 am

Now I've got your attention...
Can anyone enlighten me regarding nipple sizes? I need to replace some on our undercarriage. I've taken one of the old ones off, and it screws into an M6 nut, so I know that's what the thread is. However, the online nipple shop -- and I bet some people are disappointed when they find that site! -- lists M6 × 1 and M6 × 0.75 (with the latter number being the taper). So how can I tell which one I need? Any information gratefully received. Any amusing double entendres also welcome...

I guess the easiest is just to measure the pitch on the nipple and see if it's 1mm or 0.75mm from thread to thread. You'll obviously need one to suit the pitch of the thread you're screwing into.

The M6x1 and M5x0.75 refer to the pitch of the thread. If your original nipple screwed into a 'standard' M6 nut quite happily then you need the 1.0mm pitch.
