Stiff A800 friction throttle cable

Post by Mike Mold » Fri Nov 19, 2010 1:52 pm

I recently "acquired" a second hand ACS A800 throttle assembly. - the type with the ball & socket and 10/32 threaded end. Unfortunately, even with the friction collet backed off completely and the compression olive slid out, the first half of the cable travel is stiff. Has anyone had experience of this before, is it fixable or just a chuck-away and buy new decision?
Thanks in anticipation.

Chuck it in the bin Mike, I 'acquired' a brand new one (old stock I think) last year but the first inch was the stiffest part and no matter how i tried to make it smoother, it was a bin job. I wasted a lot of time and effort by doing the job twice over and had to pay up for a new one...so there must be a moral here somewhere!

stiif cable

I have a similar on fitted to my D112 and it slides like silk. I was very careful as to the alignment of the cable to avoid bend and kinks. Lubrication is also needed, sleeve the bare windings with heat shrink tubing and allow a good amount of oil to go down the end working the cable as it goes, there is also the possibility that there is some rust in the shaft needing rubbing down. but keep it straight and reroute it if possible.

Had an original (not ACS) and very A800 on my 'plane.

Worked OK but looked really worn - at both ends.

Came to the conclusion that the control is sooooooo important and a replacement so surprisingly inexpensive it was a no-brainer: it got changed.

Thanks chaps. So much for my Sywell flea market bargain! In the bin it goes. I've since heard from several other people who've had the same experience and had to return brand new items, indicating it's either a product vulnerable to abuse before fitting or a manufacturing defect. Caveat emptor!

Mike,

if your are chucking it then could I ask that you send it to me for recycling?

I also have an old throtle control assembly (u/s due to a kink in the inner cable close to the end of the solid rod that slides in the adjustable grip.) I plan to machine the aluminium housing to reduce weight to a minimum and then use a different cable arrangement from the end of the solid sliding rod (that is clamped by the friction nut acting on the nylon flxible olive). Its destined for the MITE.

It would be great to have a spare of the various bits and pieces - or in case I louse up the machining, or whatever. I'd really appreciate the first 10" say of the assembly (measured from the pilot's end with the ).

Thanks in advance and hope it has not already been trashed! I would very gladly re-pay the postage.
Richard
