Alternators

Anyone have experience of alternators good or bad, running a VW and voltage seems a bit on the high side. Everything working fine. Thought I would post here before trying google.

Mike,

As part of the Leburg installation on my VW 1834cc, I run a modified Honda motorbike alternator. The AC output is rectified/regulated by a small solid state unit and charges a couple of gel-filled 12 Volt batteries. I have not monitored the output voltage or its stability since commissioning the system 3 years ago but the Leburg low voltage and over-voltage warning lights have never illuminated, so far!

If it is on any interest, I can send you the alternator details.

Thanks for the info, the alternator is work fine delivering the amps. There are a lot of regulators on the market. Just curious as which is a better one. Will have to investigate over voltage protection.

When I did a Leburg cnversion including the alternator, as outlined above, I just used the Honda rectifier/regulator that came from the same bike, together with bits of the wiring loom for the correct connectors.

Make sure the regulator is securely fixed to a substantial bit of metal with good thermal contact as the regulator dissipates excess voltage as heat. I used the engine magneto, now ignition coil, mounting plate. Flat, substantial with reasonable air flow over it.

John: my goodness, is it three years since the conversion? Scary!

Hi Rob,

Yes it is indeed scary. If asked, I would have said the conversion took place "the other day" but while I was looking up the Leburg details on file, I saw the date - 2010 - which says a lot for the Leburg design. I greatly appreciated your advice at the time.
