Carb Advice

Post by cholmondeley » Tue Jan 13, 2015 6:43 pm

I have a VW 2100cc aero conversion and require a reliable single carb to suit. Can anyone suggest a readily available and suitable one. Full spec/model number and jet sizes would be most helpful.

If anyone has one that they want to sell - that would be a bonus!

Many thanks

Hi Cholmondleigh, I run an 1834cc VW on my aeroplane ,which in common with a lot of other VW's these days uses the 150CD Stromberg carburettor. This carb set-up seems to be extremely compatible and works incredibly well.
Several years ago when I was building her, I was given the rather loosely worded advice to "just get one for a Hillman Hunter" , which amazingly enough worked out.
The older type Stromberg with the mixture adjustment underneath the float chamber is the easier one to work with, as the later type required special tools to adjust the mixture.
There is no needle/jet combination which is directly compatible with use in a VW . You will probably find that your VW will be running too weak and will only run with the choke out.
What you then have to do is remove the dashpot and piston assy. drag a fine piece of wet n dry abrasive paper down the needle and then stick it back and run it again. Keep doing this and you'll notice that it needs less and less choke each time , until you've got it running smoothly. There is of course a little bit of trial and error involved in this ,but keep patient and she'll soon be purring like a Swiss watch [if you see what I mean].
Best place to enquire about buying a 150CD Stromberg is Speedy Spares, Old Shoreham Rd, Portslade,Sussex. www.speedyspares.co.uk
Don't let anything I've said override your Inspector or LAA Engineering , but the above process works, I know coz I've dunnit ! Good Luck.
