Compass

I need a new compass for an aircraft and have looked at the vertical card type from LAS and others. They come with a lead and they say uses 14v for internal lighting. Well, my plane has no 'lectrics...am I right in assuming the compass will still be useable and visible even though the internal light is not illuminated?

This UK company does a range of light aircraft compasses and some models aren't lit at all:

For what its worth, I have had very good long term experience with the Sirs panel mount compass
