Aluminium specifications

Post by tnowak » Fri Aug 07, 2009 1:06 pm

Trying to understand the differences between US and UK (EU?) aluminium specifications.

Starting with the common aviation aluminium (US) standard of 2024-T3, how do the following compare regarding strength, ease of working etc:
1. 3003
2. 1050 H14
3. 1050A H14
4. 1050 H24

Seems the 1054 is commonly available in UK and I only need a small quantity for non-structural applications (fairings and panels).

How similar is 3003 and 2024-T3?

I believe the H14 / H24 designation is hardness. How does that compare with 2024-T3?

A lot of difference between 3003 and 2024 - 3003 is manganese based and 2024 is copper based alu alloy.
I have a pdf. Aluminium Properties size 1.1Mb. should answer all you need to know  - and more  . Otherwise look in Aircraft Spruce catalogue for brief description.
Not sure how to send any attachments in this system - must read instructions.

Don't think you can send attachments with this system
Best to host it on a web server, then offer a link to it.

Or just ask for Tony's email addy via PM

I wouldn't mind a copy as well

Thanks for the info. I did manage to get some very useful info from someone at the Aluminium Federation which lists all the characteristics and differences. PM sent re: getting a copy of your PDF.
