EGT probes in VW installations

Has anyone any idea of the EGT limits and probe positions of VW installations? Does Aerovee or similar have a stated position for the probes (distance from valves or from head etc) and associated max EGTs.
There is obviously going to be a different figure for the EGT depending on the position of the probes and I wondered if I could copy a known installation to get accurate figures without burning out the probes.

i will try and look at mine i have been using mine for around 300hrs and i seem to think about 100mm from combustion chamber -- 4 senders one guage and a switch
