Headset suitable for vintage style open cockpit.

Post by G-AWMN » Mon Aug 09, 2010 11:59 am

I am looking for a set up for open cockpit flying. I currently have a David Clark headset and could buy one of the leather helmets to suit this. Alternatively I have a RAF cloth helmet from the 50's that I could add some more up to date parts to use. Neither of which is quite what I am looking for.

I have been thinking about making my own set up using an ear piece similar to that used by racing drivers and a throat mike that could be positioned inside my scarf away from wind etc. With this set up I could then wear a WW1 style flying helmet without big bulging ear pads . The aircraft is a single seater so no intercom required and the radio is a hand held.

Has anybody tried this before and if so any advice, pitfalls to watch out for?

Not done this, but had been thinking along similar lines! I saw some cheap noise-cancelling earphones, which come with ear-plug-like fittings, that I thought might serve, for example : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-SHN2500 ... =1-4-spell (there are much pricier examples of these around).
And then perhaps: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mitex-THROAT-MI ... 902&sr=1-5
Or this one which claims to be ICOM compatible:

Maybe I had better resurrect this plan, and start soldering...
