Welding fins onto VW heads.

Having been given a 'dropped' head to play with, I was wondering if anyone had experience of which TIG rod to use (4047?) and whether there was any advantage to adding extra fin area at the same time.
Options, opinions, suggestions, links etc etc. Anything would be welcomed.

Rob, there was something on one of the Yahoo group forums about this. A guy had welded extra fins or extensions in relevant places and he had recorded the resulting temperatures and changes. Worth googling.

Either will do! :D

Anyway, I've googled but not found the 'full story', just some links to references on the subject. It appears that I'll need some 4047 rod to fix any fins on.
Silly question time. Since this would be for a FRED with no firewall-forwards plans, does this fall under 'best practice' or 'mod'?

Take a look here and then trace back to the words.

"Recently on the VW Conversion list there has been some discussion about a method
to increase the cooling capacity of the VW cylinder heads by adding additional
fin area. This involves brazing on fin extensions using Durafix aluminum
welding rod. Wayne Clagg posted his results and I thought some of you might
want to hear what he has to say." Follow this here - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aerovee/message/5604 (You will have to join the group to see this).
