Charging issues - generator/regulator

Post by R Perry » Fri May 06, 2011 8:36 am

Ammeter on my 0-200 showed a lack of charging recently. I put a voltmeter on the 20Amo Delco remy generator and it showed increasing volts with the throttle up to 15 volts so assumed generator ok. Then I borrowed a friends regulator and had a 5 amp charge. Visited a local auto electrical dealer to source a replacement regulator which looked very like the existing Delco remy and had 3 solenoids inside as had the delco remy. Same three terminals Field/Gen/Battery. No charge however when connected up.
Now beyond my knowledge level! Does anyone know if such an automotive unit should work or should I go for say the Airworld unit which again looks virtually identical but perhaps different internal wiring?l,
Any advice much appreciated! :?

Problem solved! It was poor connections on the ammeter therefore producing a voltage drop so no charge to the battery

Charging

Well done for finding that! Nearly as much fun as the lack of charge on my Auster. Things were complicated by the generator being wind driven so testing was always tricky. Eventually fault traced to someone having replaced the regulator and got the wiring wrong! Wire moved to correct place and now charging at 12 amps!
