Propeller balancing - a £2.99 vibration meter

Post by James L » Sat Aug 06, 2011 1:24 am

Those of you that have read the article on propeller balancing in the latest mag may be interested to know that there is an iPhone application (called, conveniently, 'Vibration') that can be used to measure the wobble in your prop.

I've just tried it out sat on a gently humming external hard drive her on my desk and it appears to be very sensitive. There's a comment on their user forums from someone who tested it against some super-expensive industrial test equipment and found it to be pretty much spot on.

I guess the accuracy could ultimately depend on how many bashes your phone has taken in it's life, but for £2.99 I thought it was a good start.

£2.99 + £600 odd for the phone.

Can I come and watch what happens to it and you when the engine starts ;)
