I think Graham Smith will be bringing the 80hp Sauer in for around £7500 so $12, 000 is comparable to that I suppose. These engines aren't really VW conversions any more, I think the Sauer for instance has virtually no original VW components, they re purpose built aero engines and compared to Jabiru and Rotax they are reasonably priced. Aero Conversions AeroVee is a VW conversion in the true sense of the word and costs $7000, Great Plains might work out a little cheaper.
One of the big pluses with a genuine VW conversion is maintenance and rebuild cost, very inexpensive. Improved cases almost invariably work out heavier, aluminium cases have been around for years but carry a 14lb weight penalty.
