2024-T3 Aluminium Sheeting

Post by tnowak » Tue Nov 15, 2011 8:05 am

Anyone know of a UK supplier, other than LAS, who is likely to stock (and sell) 2024-T3 0.032" aluminium sheet? Only looking for one sheet, ideally 1 metre square in order to cut down on waste.

I have been advised by the people answering PFA Metals phone number that they no longer supply small quants, shame realy because thay had a good range.

Thanks, but tried both those. PFA Metals seems to have given up, or at least that is the impression based on their website (years out of date).
Any others?

When I was looking for some 2024 or an equivalent last year I basically gave up and bought it from LAS.

As regards finding an equivalent almost everybody runs a mile and refuses to talk any further when you mention aircraft. Of those that are left they either can't help or charge even more than LAS because 2024 tends only to be produced for the US market and is used almost exclusively for aircraft, being alclad (an aluminium alloy coated in a layer of pure aluminium).

I had a bit more luck with finding an equivalent for 6061 which seems also to be a US market spec. I'd have to dig out the number. I used it for non-structural stuff that I still wanted to be strong and light!

Another builder recently put me on to Smiths as being cheaper than LAS.

They carry all the aviation grades, and they offer a guillotining service, however it's not clear if they stock or sell part sheets of aviation grade Al: http://www.smithmetal.com/services/guillotining.htm

For a 12 x 4ft x 0.032"sheet of 2024-T3, I was recently quoted around £180+VAT.
