Ikarus C42 corrosion and safety Spot

Post by Mick Bevan » Sun May 13, 2012 9:10 pm

Hi all,
Safety Spot's recent images of corrosion on struts prompts me to mention two sets of Ikarus C42 undercarriage struts found to be beyond repair because of intergranular corrosion. One had just 140 hours TT and the second less than 500. Any one else found these?

I've seen it on an Ikarus as well. Top of the strut and to the front of the charging valve. Treated it and sprayed with LPS3. It's got no worse in the last 5 years or so.

This aircraft operates from a hayfield and I took it that acid/chemical attack was to blame.

Edit. Just posted a couple of pics on my Facebook if you want to add me and have a looksee Mick.

Hi there,
In both cases, it happened at the bottom of the main undercarriage strut where it joins the axle and both sets were written off.
