Alodine - Alochrom

Having just made some parts from Aluminium that will be exposed to all the weather and mud, grass, water etc on the undercarriage , I want to use a conversion liquid such as alodine to put a similar sort of protection on as the old part had enjoyed for 40 years.

Has anyone got any tips on using the stuff as I understand its a bit nasty !.
