Removing carbon from pistons

My Continental engine is now dismantled and needs cleaning up, ready for another inspection and decisions about its overhaul.
Any suggestions for the best and safest method of removing carbon deposits from the tops of the pistons? I understand that the carbon deposits are virtually insoluble ( unlike the pistons), so assume it will be necessary to carefully scrape the stuff off.

Do you have carbon only or do you have Avgas deposites IE TEL deposits?
If only on mogas , I use soap powder solution , @ 60 c and green scotch bright pads, should soften up . Never boil or leave unattended .
Some use cif and green pads and hot water , works on 2 strokes..........
Never use abrasive paper or a metel scraper though a brass wire whell works well on the TEL deposite as they are much harder and bond well. Seen some folks glass beed blast the pictons which I think is horriblle.
Cheers
Kevin

I seem to remember that a screw-driver and hammer worked well when I re-built my Mini engine in my youth..........

Paul,
I remember that technique very well!

Yes but that was only satisfactory because those are the tools BL / Rover used to build them in the first place!

If you live locally to Romford I can Soda blast them for you for £40 for the set. Works brilliantly and no scratches! Give me a PM if interested.
