CHT Gauge vs DI

Hi All,
Technical question here. I've a CHT gauge in my cockpit (attached to an 0-200). Is it worth having, as I'd rather like to swap it for a DI.

All advice appreciated.

Will , if you are happy with your magnetic compass' accuracy , then keep the CHT gauge every time .

Over reliance on DI's can get you into all sorts of shenanigans. I've flown my baby for so long now without DI and find that when I do fly an a/c equipped with a DI , I just ignore it .

The CHT gauge is actually useful !

I'm with Chris. I have no DI, just an old Compass and it would serve me well if I needed it.
With the use of GPS the DI wouldn't be that important in my thoughts. Mind you I haven't got a CHT on my old A65, just Oil Pressure and Temp. Life is very easy!

I agree with the others, keep the CHT. However, you could have both.

If you already have a vacuum system a DI will cost about £450 plus fittings, otherwise an electric one will be £1020 (prices from Mendelssohn).

However, for £1110 you could fit a Dynon D2. It will give GPS track, not magnetic heading, but will be more reliable and give a lot more other information (GPS height and groundspeed plus more). It's small and light and can be mounted anywhere.

Or for £0.00 you could have the Airspace Avoid App on a mobile or tablet which gives GPS track, GPS height, Groundspeed plus a magenta line to follow if you import a .gox file

So how do you use the CHT gauge for leaning?

And as it happens I have access to an affordable DI.

RE : Using a CHT gauge for leaning.. A CHT gauge may not be sensitive enough for that Will. It depends where its pick-off is. You're not getting confused with an EGT gauge are you mate ?
Even so , you'll probably find that your mixture control lever is telling you long before anything registers on a CHT gauge how effective your 'leaning off' is.

I've got a great idea. Swap your DI for an EGT gauge !

There's plenty of modern-day electrickery around these days to tell you your track, whether it be a GPS installation or a phone-app.
Get Tracey Emin to paint your DI mauve and then get Damien Hirst to preserve it in formaldehyde and sell it to the Tate Modern.... A DI doing something useful for a change...
