Please forgive such a novice question but can an Auster be operated on an LAA permit to fly rather than a CAA one? If so, does that change who can do maintenance on the aircraft, I.e. the owner? Could the plane be rebuilt by the owner or reengined? (With LAA approval)

Yes Austers can and are operated on an LAA permit scheme, but you need to find an approved LAA engineer/Inspector. There is a list of them on this site.

Where abouts are you? I have an Auster on a permit. I got her as a barn find and we could drink beer and talk Austers!
