Post by iancallier » Sun Jul 05, 2020 2:32 pm

Has anyone found a reliable varnish to coat the Piper J3 Cub cork float?

The varnish used is not ethanol proof, so I replaced my float with an ethanol proof replacement. As I have a Vagabond they are Ford Model A parts, and available for vintage cars. Though we have no immediate plans in our group to use fuel with ethanol content, I have been slowly replacing all seals and parts, just in case it is put in the tank by error.

You can get them through LAS (actually AS&S parts), where they seem to do two sizes.

Note they are not trimable, so cannot be cut down to match your size.

Why not use 2-pack epoxy varnish; totally fuel-proof once cured.
Available from all good yachting suppliers.
